and now i have been here two years. recalling to the two years, i think i have to talk about one thing--learning. learn how to study independently, learn how to get along with others, learn to love, learn to… oh, there are too much things we have to learn.
comparing with senior high school, college is a rather different place. there aren’t so many people to watch you and guide you how to do something any more, neither are there so many students who share with you one dream. in college, you must think and study yourself, so you have to learn and practice to control yourself.
another relationship in college is friendship. my roommates have lived two years with me. in these years, they forgive my faults, cry with me, laugh with me, play with me… they always stand with me and support me, i have learned a lot from them. i love them all and treasure the friendship with them.
in the ne_t 2 years,i’ll try my best to and make great contributions to society! that’s my college life. i cherish all i have e_perienced in college. i love you, my college!

i am honored to address you tonight. on behalf of the graduating masters and doctoral students of washington university"s school of engineering and applied science, i would like to thank all the parents, spouses, families, and friends who encouraged and supported us as we worked towards our graduate degrees. i would especially like to thank my own family, eight members of which are in the audience today. i would also like to thank all of the department secretaries and other engineering school staff members who always seemed to be there when confused graduate students needed help. and finally i would like to thank the washington university faculty members who served as our instructors, mentors, and friends.
as i think back on the seven-and-a-half years i spent at washington university, my mind is filled with memories, happy, sad, frustrating, and even humorous.
tonight i would like to share with you some of the memories that i take with me as i leave washington university.
i take with me the memory of my office on the fourth floor of lopata hall - the room at the end of the hallway that was too hot in summer, too cold in winter, and always too far away from the women"s restroom. the window was my office"s best feature. were it not for the physics building across the way, it would have afforded me a clear view of the arch. but instead i got a view of the roof of the physics building. i also had a view of one corner of the roof of urbauer hall, which seemed to be a favorite perch for various species of birds who alternately won perching rights for several weeks at a time. and i had a nice view of the physics courtyard, noteworthy as a good place for watching people run their dogs. it"s amazing how fascinating these views became the longer i worked on my dissertation. but my favorite view was of a nearby oak tree. from my fourth-floor vantage point i had a rather intimate view of the tree and the various birds and squirrels that inhabit it. occasionally a bird would land on my window sill, which usually had the effect of startling both of us.
i take with me the memory of two young professors who passed away while i was a graduate student. anne johnstone, the only female professor from whom i took a course in the engineering school, and bob durr, a political science professor and a member of my dissertation committee, both lost brave battles with cancer. i remember them fondly.名校優(yōu)秀畢業(yè)生英文演講稿
i take with me the memory of failing the first e_am in one of the first engineering courses i took as an undergraduate. i remember thinking the course was just too hard for me and that i would never be able to pass it. so i went to talk to the professor, ready to drop the class. and he told me not to give up, he told me i could succeed in his class. for reasons that seemed completely ludicrous at the time, he said he had faith in me. and after that my grades in the class slowly improved, and i ended the semester with an a on the final e_am. i remember how motivational it was to know that someone believed in me.
i take with me memories of the midwestern friendliness that so surprised me when i arrived in st. louis 8 years ago. since moving to new jersey, i am sad to say, nobody has asked me where i went to high school.
i take with me the memory of the short-lived computer science graduate student social committee lunches. the idea was that groups of cs grad students were supposed to take turns cooking a monthly lunch. but after one grad student prepared a pot of chicken that poisoned almost the entire cs grad student population and one unlucky faculty member in one fell swoop, there wasn"t much enthusiasm for having more lunches.
i take with me the memory of a more successful graduate student effort, the establishment of the association of graduate engineering students, known as ages. started by a handful of engineering graduate students because we needed a way to elect representatives to a campus-wide graduate student government, ages soon grew into an organization that now sponsors a wide variety of activities and has been instrumental in addressing a number of engineering graduate student concerns.名校優(yōu)秀畢業(yè)生英文演講稿

the first memorable moment for me was thecompany activity held in may by our human resources department. we played games together and had a great time. that day was my 25th birthday, but that is not the most important reason whyi remember it so well. firstly, i learned our company’s history, and felt thatit is very difficult to start a business, and thought that everyone in ourcompany is very hard working. secondly, i joined maple’s team that day,although we almost lost all of the competitions, everyone was so happy andfriendly and my team made me understood the meaning of the phrase– "team spirit"。i began to understand and like our company after that day’s activity.
the second memorable moment for me was the birthday party held in may. i never had such a birthday party before, what’s more, my birthday is the same month as our general manager lu, and i felt very honored and grateful. i received a lot of warm celebration words from all of you and a lovely birthday card. i was so moved that day and had the feeling that i am a part of this big family. when i blew off the candles, i made three wishes, firstly, make progress in english, secondly, make progress in japanese,thirdly, do my best to become a good translator in suntrans. i hope my wisheswill come true in the future.
the third memorable moment for me was the second e_perience e_changing forum of mining investment 2024. this is the first time i took part in such a big conference, and i was very e_cited and willing to do something for it. we did work very hard for this conference, and even asked the dragon boat festival to contribute. this conference gave me a great worke_perience and taught me many things: for e_ample how to do advertising and marketing, and a great knowledge in mining industry. the most important is, our young fellows’team work is very brilliant, and i love our company more thanever after this conference.

there is an alternative, however, and it may be one that hasn"t occurred to you. let me try to e_plain it by telling you a story about one of your peers, and the alternative that hadn"t occurred to her. a couple of years ago, i participated in a panel discussion at harvard that dealt with some of these same matters, and afterward i was contacted by one of the students who had come to the event, a young woman who was writing her senior thesis about harvard itself, how it instills in its students what she called self-efficacy, the sense that you can do anything you want. self-efficacy, or, in more familiar terms, self-esteem. there are some kids, she said, who get an a on a test and say, "i got it because it was easy." and there are other kids, the kind with self-efficacy or self-esteem, who get an a on a test and say, "i got it because i"m smart."

again, there"s nothing wrong with thinking that you got an a because you"re smart. but what that harvard student didn"t realize—and it was really quite a shock to her when i suggested it—is that there is a third alternative. true self-esteem, i proposed, means not caring whether you get an a in the first place. true self-esteem means recognizing, despite everything that your upbringing has trained you to believe about yourself, that the grades you get—and the awards, and the test scores, and the trophies, and the acceptance letters—are not what defines who you are.

but i"m not here to talk about technological innovation, i"m here to talk about a different kind. it"s not about inventing a new machine or a new drug. it"s about inventing your own life. not following a path, but making your own path. the kind of imagination i"m talking about is moral imagination. "moral" meaning not right or wrong, but having to do with making choices. moral imagination means the capacity to envision new ways to live your life.

let me give you another countere_ample. i wrote an essay a couple of years ago that touched on some of these same points. i said, among other things, that kids at places like yale or stanford tend to play it safe and go for the conventional rewards. and one of the most common criticisms i got went like this: what about teach for america? lots of kids from elite colleges go and do tfa after they graduate, so therefore i was wrong. tfa, tfa—i heard that over and over again. and teach for america is undoubtedly a very good thing. but to cite tfa in response to my argument is precisely to miss the point, and to miss it in a way that actually confirms what i"m saying. the problem with tfa—or rather, the problem with the way that tfa has become incorporated into the system—is that it"s just become another thing to get into.

in terms of its content, teach for america is completely different from goldman sachs or mckinsey or harvard medical school or berkeley law, but in terms of its place within the structure of elite e_pectations, of elite choices, it is e_actly the same. it"s prestigious, it"s hard to get into, it"s something that you and your parents can brag about, it looks good on your résumé, and most important, it represents a clearly marked path. you don"t have to make it up yourself, you don"t have to do anything but apply and do the work—just like college or law school or mckinsey or whatever. it"s the stanford or harvard of social engagement. it"s another hurdle, another badge. it requires aptitude and diligence, but it does not require a single ounce of moral imagination.

moral imagination is hard, and it"s hard in a completely different way than the hard things you"re used to doing. and not only that, it"s not enough. if you"re going to invent your own life, if you"re going to be truly autonomous, you also need courage: moral courage. the courage to act on your values in the face of what everyone"s going to say and do to try to make you change your mind. because they"re not going to like it. morally courageous individuals tend to make the people around them very uncomfortable. they don"t fit in with everybody else"s ideas about the way the world is supposed to work, and still worse, they make them feel insecure about the choices that they themselves have made—or failed to make. people don"t mind being in prison as long as no one else is free. but stage a jailbreak, and everybody else freaks out.

these are the kinds of questions that young people find themselves being asked today if they even think about doing something a little bit different. even worse, the kinds of questions they are made to feel compelled to ask themselves. many students have spoken to me, as they navigated their senior years, about the pressure they felt from their peers—from their peers—to justify a creative or intellectual life. you"re made to feel like you"re crazy: crazy to forsake the sure thing, crazy to think it could work, crazy to imagine that you even have a right to try.

do you see how absurd this is? but these are the nets that are flung at you, and this is what i mean by the need for courage. and it"s a never-ending process. at that harvard event two years ago, one person said, about my assertion that college students needed to keep rethinking the decisions they"ve made about their lives, "we already made our decisions, back in middle school, when we decided to be the kind of high achievers who get into harvard." and i thought, who wants to live with the decisions that they made when they were 12? let me put that another way. who wants to let a 12-year-old decide what they"re going to do for the rest of their lives? or a 19-year-old, for that matter?

when i was in the primary school, i have a dream. i want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all. when i was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university. and when eventually i got into the university, my dream was to graduate.
how pathetic! when we grow up, we dream less and become more realistic. why? why do we have to change our dreams, so, so in order to let it be "fulfilled"? why do we have to surrender to the so-called "reality"? what is the reality actually?
ladies and gentlemen, the reality is not real. it is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies. flying, for e_ample, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years. a hundred years ago, "man could not fly" was still regarded as the "reality". now if that was really the reality, what did the wright brothers do? how did some of you get to macau? only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams.
people say that our future is the difference between the reality and our dreams. and if, unfortunately, mr. reality wins this war, then i see no future of mankind at all. aids will never be curable as this is the reality; people living in the undeveloped countries will suffer from starvation forever as this is the reality; 4)disputes among different countries would never be settled as this misunderstandings and intolerance is the reality.
