hello everyone.today i"m glad to be here to give a speech about my fresh e_perience in china agriculture university.
first i must say the campus life is really different from what i have e_perienced in high school.for instance,i used to lean upon my dormitory teacher to wake me up on time.but now i have to set several alarm clocks to make myself could hear them in the morning.otherwise,i would miss my class.
and then even worse there would be nobody remind me e_cept my teacher!so the differences are everywhere and i could easily find them.
the change of life is great and it"s wonderful:i have more time of my own and the rights to decide how i live.
my campus activities are rich and colorful.learning english has become a habit to me cause i plan to study abroad in ne_t few years.playing guzheng is my favorite activity.i have kept on practising it since i was a little girl and i wish to win more competitions in my campus life.

have been in university for about one year. during my stay here, i came to realize that university life is like drinking coke. we e_perience all tastes of life here, sour, sweet, bitter and hot.
i am from province, which is far away from here. i often miss my mum, friends, and relatives in my hometown. however, i can"t see them very often. so loneliness always keeps me company. i am sad that i can"t be there with them.
lucky for me, life in university is rich and colorful. with more free time,we can do many more things besides study, such as joining societies clubs, and taking part-time jobs. such activities not only make our life more colorful, but also help us improve all kinds of skills. the university is a society miniature, what we learn here will benefit our future life.
our path in life will not always be smooth. setbacks can"t be avoided. failing an important e_am, break up with boy or girl friend, or refused by a promising company, such setbacks are likely to get us down. sometimes we fell so frustrated that we even burst into tears.
drinkin coke is wonderful, despite the undesirble consequent hiccups. it"s bitter, sour and peppery, but also sweet. and you"ll even feel e_cited after gulping down a glass. a college e_perience is part of growing up. we cry, smile, fall in love, get hurt, leave, learn and then we become a better person.
university life is like drinking coke. i"m e_periencing it. and i know, i enjoy it!

in my 18 years of life, there have been many things. university days are the best part of them. i can never forget the days when i stepped into my university. i was impressed by its garden-like campus, its enthusiastic students and especially its learning atmosphere. i at once fell in love with it.
after the arduous military training, i get absolutely absorbed in my studies. the classes given by the teachers are e_cellent. they provide us with information not only from our te_tbooks but from many other sources as well. they easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as i can.

i think every student in junior high school or even a new term the first class meeting is a "new semester new plan," the university did not e_pect to have such a ban would be the same. however, every freshman to the university of strange environments such as e_ploration in the dark. however, an early goal set for myself in the dark, lit as a beacon, a constant reminder to guide us forward.
sister school seniors who passed before the e_change of e_perience, we can avoid detours. but everyone there is a separate individual, the e_perience can not be completely copied, should have its own general plan. college life includes learning, work and life. following on from the three aspects i came to my planning.
about learning: as long as we still a student, the total should be on learning more important position.
said freshman should be laid and compacted in the high number of basic english. therefore, in this two subjects put more effort is acceptable. last week the high number may be, i do feel a certain degree of difficulty, the preview before class and after school consolidation e_ercise is important. hope that through their practical learning in high numbers on the do not hang division. morning reading soon began to organize, which is learning english, the best opportunity to practice oral english.
indeed difficult to get up early, but i, as a member of the department of learning, i not only have to set an e_ample for other students should have acquired in the morning reading in. we have classes two nights a week only, the night a lot of time should be fully utilized. go to the library, participate in various activities that can harvest a lot of lectures!
other courses i would like to attend a lecture class, e_am take notes, e_ams should be no problem.
about work: every freshmen want to get a job at the university to e_ercise their own. i was no e_ception, e_periencing a lot of job interviews, into the three departments. will certainly be a little tired, a little busy, but i am full, know a lot of people, make more friends, learned a great deal of knowledge not in books. learning to do the work of the best things correct.
about life: as born in wuhan, is the first time i came to the university of fully independent living. from open water to the laundry to wash, to organize the house ... everything seemed very used to. without the help of parents and care, even nagging, autonomy back to me. more were free, were less constrained; more hard copies, far fewer care; more were lazy, far fewer urge ... but bedroom, the students have the help and concern, i also feel the general home warmth.
i believe in learning, work, find the balance between three aspects of life, go hand in hand, college life will be our life a perfect memory!
thank you! the end of my speech!

just make to it the finals, they had to get past 60 others speaking on “the impact of globalization on traditional chinese values”。 that was at the semi-final on april 8-9. what will chinese college students think about the impact? each contestant had his own take on the subject. _ia summed up globalization by saying: “it’s just controversial and hard to say whether it is good or bad.” _ia took the old wall of his city, nanjing, as a metaphor. he spoke about the conflict over whether to protect the old walls or tear them down to represent the conflict of ideas. he suggested that people protect the wall as a valuable relic while tearing down the “intangible walls” of their minds that prevent communication. while some other students are more focusing on the impact of globalization on family relations, attitudes towards love, and job-hunting.
over the past 10 years, the national english speaking competition has given contestants a chance to speak on a variety of topics closely related to their lives. chinese students become more open-minded and receive various ideas and thinking over the decade. diversity becomes more obvious on campus, students have more opportunities to e_press and show themselves. it’s not an easy task for the contestants to win through the fierce competition. owning to their passion, hard work and persistence, they finally succeeded in the contest.
liu _in, the first champion of the national contest, is now an anchorperson of cctv-9. recalling the passion of study on campus, she said: “when you want to e_press your idea by a foreign language without finding a right way, you’re really upset. then you have to encourage yourself, and after a long term of bitterness, suddenly you find you get the right way with joy.” with the champion title in 21st century cup, liu attended the international public speaking competition in london in may 1996 afterward and got the first prize historically.
the winner in 2003 surprised the audience, since she came from accounting major instead of english major. gu qiubei, then 22 years old, was a senior in shanghai foreign studies university. while being asked whether she had some good methods to learn english, she said: “learn english with passion and enthusiasm.” attracted by the greatness of english language, gu even changed her major from accounting to english in her postgraduate study. the most important issue in english learning process she pointed out is personal interests. only people interested in english benefit a lot from the learning methods and those with passion will finally achieve their dreams.
when chief of global media giant viacom sumner redstone gave a speech in tsinghua university on his autobiography a passion to win, he was asked what made him to restart his career at the age of 60, the 81-year-old media tycoon said: “firstly, there’s a self-driving force in my deep heart, which keeps my passion to succeed and surpass others; secondly, i don’t think i’m too old to leave work, actually i love my work very much.”
some of the contestants have achieved their dreams as redstone; still others are on the way to their dream. with a passion to win, you will overcome obstacles and succeed at the end.
i’m studying in a city that’s famous for its walls. people who visit my city are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, especially when silhouetted against the setting sun with gold, shining streaks. the old, cracked bricks are covered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still for centuries.
our ancestors liked to build walls. they built walls in beijing, _i’an, nanjing and many other cities, and they built the great wall, which snakes across half our country. they built walls to protect against enemies and evil spirits. this tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public.
for a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world to me.
my perceptions, however, changed after i made a hiking trip to the eastern suburbs of my city. my classmates and i were walking with some foreign students. as we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, which formed a wide canopy above our heads. suddenly one foreign student asked me, “where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?”
“we’re already in the eastern suburbs,” i replied. he seemed taken aback, “i thought you chinese had walls for everything.” his remark set off a heated debate. at one point, he likened our walled cities to “jails”, while i insisted that the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in china that had no walls.
that debate had no winners, but i did learn a lot from this student. for instance, he told me that some major universities like o_ford and cambridge were not surrounded by walls. i have to admit that we do have many walls in china, and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whether they are physical or intangible. we will keep some walls but tear down those that impede our development.
let me give another e_ample.
a year ago, when i was working on a term paper, i needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. however, the librarian coldly rejected my request to borrow it, saying, “you can’t borrow this book, you’re not a student here.” in the end, i had to spend 200 yuan to buy a copy. meanwhile, the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf.
at the beginning of this semester, i heard that my university had started to think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at other universities, so my e_perience wouldn’t be repeated. barriers would be replaced by bridges. an inter-library loan system would give us access to books from any library. with globalization and china integrated into the world, i believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.
i know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. but one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to china’s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to e_amine their role in the modern world.
and how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities? should we tear them down? definitely not. my city, like beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. these walls attract historians, archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history and cultural heritage. walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. if the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls. they are now bridges that link east and west, south and north, and all countries of the world. our cultural heritage will survive globalization.

saying goodbye to childhood,we step into another important time in the pace of young, facing new situations, dealing with different problems.....
everyone has his ownunderstanding of young,it is a period of time of beauty and wonders, only after you have
e_perienced the sour ,sweet ,bitter and salty can you really become a person of significance.thre time of young is limitted,it may pass by without your attention, and when you discover what has happened ,it is always too late.grasping the young well means a better time is waiting for you in the near future,or the situation may be opposite .
having a view on these great men in the history of hunmanbeing, they all made full use of their youth time ,to do things that are useful to society,to the whole mankind, and as a cosquence ,they are remembered by later
generations, admired by everyone.so do something in the time of young, although you may not get achievements as these greatmen did ,though not for the whole word, just for youeself, for those around!
the young is just like blooming flowers, they are so beautiful when blooming, they make people feel happy, but with time passing by,after they withers ,moet people think they are ugly.and so it is the same with young,we are enthusiastic when we are young, then we may lose our passion when getting older and older.so we must treasure it ,don"t let the limitted time pass by ,leaving nothing of significance.

a few days after my husband paul was diagnosed with stage iv lung cancer,we were lying in our bed at home, and paul said,it’s going to be ok.and i remember answering back, yes.we just don’t know what ok means yet.
paul and i had met as first-year medical students at yale.he was smart and kind and super funny.he used to keep a gorilla suitin the trunk of his car,and he’d say, it’s for emergencies only.
i fell in love with paul as i watched the care he took with his patients.he stayed late talking with them, seeking to understand the e_perience of illnessand not just its technicalities.he later told me he fell in love with mewhen he saw me cry over an ekg of a heart that had ceased beating.we didn’t know it yet,but even in the heady days of young love,we were learning how to approach suffering together.
we got married and became doctors.i was working as an internistand paul was finishing his training as a neurosurgeonwhen he started to lose weight.he developed e_cruciating back painand a cough that wouldn’t go away.and when he was admitted to the hospital,a ct scan revealed tumorsin paul’s lungs and in his bones.we had both cared for patients with devastating diagnoses;now it was our turn.
we lived with paul’s illness for 22 months.he wrote a memoir about facing mortality.i gave birth to our daughter cady, and we loved her and each other.we learned directly how to struggle through really tough medical decisions.the day we took paul into the hospital for the last timewas the most difficult day of my life.
when he turned to me at the endand said, i’m ready,i knew that wasn’t just a brave decision.it was the right one.paul didn’t want a ventilator and cpr.in that moment, the most important thing to paulwas to hold our baby daughter.nine hours later, paul died.
i’ve always thought of myself as a caregiver —most physicians do —and taking care of paul deepened what that meant.watching him reshape his identity during his illness, learning to witness and accept his pain, talking together through his choices —those e_periences taught methat resilience does not mean bouncing back to where you were before,or pretending that the hard stuff isn’t hard.it is so hard.it’s painful, messy stuff.but it’s the stuff.and i learned that when we approach it together,we get to decide what success looks like.
one of the first things paul said to me after his diagnosis was,i want you to get remarried.and i was like, whoa, i guesswe get to say anything out loud.
it was so shockingand heart breaking ...and generous, and really comfortingbecause it was so starkly honest, and that honesty turned out to be e_actly what we needed.early in paul’s illness,we agreed we would just keep saying things out loud.tasks like making a will,or completing our advance directives —tasks that i had always avoided —were not as daunting as they once seemed.
i realized that completing an advance directive is an act of love —like a wedding vow.a pact to take care of someone, codifying the promisethat til death do us part,i will be there.if needed, i will speak for you.i will honor your wishes.that paperwork became a tangible part of our love story.
as physicians, paul and i were in a good positionto understand and evenaccept his diagnosis.we weren’t angry about it,luckily, because we’d seen so many patient sin devastating situations, and we knew that death is a part of life.but it’s one thing to know that;it was a very different e_perienceto actually live with the sadness and uncertainty of a serious illness.huge strides are being made against lung cancer, but we knew that paul likely had months to a few years left to live.
during that time, paul wrote about his transition from doctor to patient.he talked about feeling like he was suddenly at a crossroads, and how he would have though the’d be able to see the path, that because he treated so many patients, maybe he could follow in their footsteps.
but he was totally disoriented.rather than a path, paul wrote,i saw insteadonly a harsh, vacant, gleaming white desert.as if a sandstorm had erased all familiarity.i had to face my mortalityand try to understand what made my life worth living, and i needed my oncologist’s help to do so.
the clinicians taking care of paulgave me an even deeper appreciation for my colleagues in health care.we have a tough job.we’re responsible for helping patients have clarity around their prognosesand their treatment options, and that’s never easy, but it’s especially toughwhen you’re dealing with potentially terminal illnesses like cancer.
some people don’t want to know how long they have left, others do.either way, we never have those answers.sometimes we substitute hopeby emphasizing the best-case scenario.in a survey of physicians,55 percent said they painted a rosier picturethan their honest opinionwhen describing a patient’s prognosis.it’s an instinct born out of kindness.but researchers have foundthat when people better understand the possible outcomes of an illness, they have less an_iety,greater ability to planand less trauma for their families.
families can struggle with those conversations, but for us, we also found that information immensely helpful with big decisions.most notably, whether to have a baby.months to a few years meant paul was not likely to see her grow up.but he had a good chance of being there for her birthand for the beginning of her life.
i remember asking paulif he thought havingto say goodbye to a childwould make dying even more painful.and his answer astounded me.he said, wouldn’t it be great if it did?and we did it.not in order to spite cancer, but because we were learningthat living fully means accepting suffering.
paul’s oncologist tailored his chemoso he could continue working as a neurosurgeon, which initially we thought was totally impossible.when the cancer advancedand paul shifted from surgery to writing, his palliative care doctor prescribed a stimulant medicationso he could be more focused.they asked paul about his priorities and his worries.they asked him what trade-off she was willing to make.those conversations are the best way to ensurethat your health care matches your values.
paul joked that it’s not like that birds and bees talkyou have with your parents, where you all get it over with as quickly as possible, and then pretend it never happened.you revisit the conversationas things change.you keep saying things out loud.i’m forever gratefulbecause paul’s clinicians feltthat their job wasn’t to try to give us answers they didn’t have,or only to try to fi_ things for us,but to counsel paul through painful choices ...when his body was failing but his will to live wasn’t.
later, after paul died,i received a dozen bouquets of flowers, but i sent just one ...to paul’s oncologist, because she supported his goalsand she helped him weigh his choices.she knew that living means more than just staying alive.
a few weeks ago,a patient came into my clinic.a woman dealing with a serious chronic disease.and while we were talking about her life and her health care, she said, i love my palliative care team.they taught me that it’s ok to say ’no’.yeah, i thought, of course it is.but many patients don’t feel that.compassion and choices did a studywhere they asked people about their health care preferences.and a lot of people started their answers with the wordswell, if i had a choice ...if i had a choice.
and when i read that if,i understood betterwhy one in four peoplereceives e_cessive or unwanted medical treatment,or watches a family member receive e_cessive or unwanted medical treatment.it’s not because doctors don’t get it.we do.we understand the real psychological consequenceson patients and their families.the things is, we deal with them, too.half of critical care nurses and a quarter of icu doctorshave considered quitting their jobsbecause of distress over feeling that for some of their patients, they’ve provided care that didn’t fit with the person’s values.but doctors can’t make sure your wishes are respecteduntil they know what they are.
would you want to be on life support if it offered any chance of longer life?are you most worried about the quality of that time, rather than quantity?both of those choices are thoughtful and brave, but for all of us, it’s our choice.that’s true at the end of lifeand for medical care through out our lives.
if you’re pregnant,do you want genetic screening?is a knee replacement right or not?do you want to do dialysisin a clinic or at home?the answer is:it depends.what medical care will help youlive the way you want to?i hope you remember that questionthe ne_t time you facea decision in your health care.remember that you always have a choice, and it is ok to say no to a treatment that’s not right for you.
there’s a poem by w.s. merwin —it’s just two sentences long —that captures how i feel now.your absence has gone through melike thread through a needle.everything i do is stitched with its color.for me that poem evokes my love for paul, and a new fortitudethat came from loving and losing him.
when paul said, it’s going to be ok,that didn’t mean that we could cure his illness.instead, we learned to accept both joy and sadness at the same time;to uncover beauty and purposeboth despite and because we are all bornand we all die.and for all the sadness and sleepless nights,it turns out there is joy.
i leave flowers on paul’s graveand watch our two-year-old run around on the grass.i build bonfires on the beachand watch the sunset with our friends.e_ercise and mindfulness meditation have helped a lot.and someday,i hope i do get remarried.
most importantly,i get to watch our daughter grow.i’ve thought a lot about what i’m going to say to herwhen she’s older.cady, engaging in the full range of e_perience —living and dying, love and loss —is what we get to do.being human doesn’t happen despite suffering.it happens within it.when we approach suffering together, when we choose not to hide from it,our lives don’t diminish, they e_pand.

what life is about
as we all know, the most important thing in life is our attitude towards it, tons of men have tried different ways of treating life, and some succeeded, some failed, and here are some of the tips they left us.
life isn"t about keeping score. life isn"t about your shoes or your hair or the color of your skin. in fact it"s not about if you have lots of friends or if you are alone, and it"s not about how accepted or unaccepted you are. life just isn"t about that.
but life is about whom you love and who you hurt. it"s about how you feel about yourself. it"s about trust, happiness and compassion. it"s about sticking up for your friends and replacing inner hate with love. life is about avoiding jealousy, overcoming ignorance and building confidence. it"s about what you say and what you mean. it"s about seeing people for who they are and not what they have. and we should always remember to be ourselves. other might have things that we desire but being what we really are is the only trail leading to the true colors of life. most of all, it"s about choosing to use your life to touch someone else"s in a way that could have never been achieved otherwise.
the parado_ of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers; we buy more but enjoy them less. we"ve learnt how to make a living but not a life, we"ve added years to life, but not life to years. and it is time for us to choose whether to make a difference in our life.
and these choices are what life is about.

honourable judges and friendsgood morning! i am very glad to be here to share my college life with you .
two years ago i came into this city of and started my college life the most memorable journey of my life. i was just a shy and little girl that time. all the things seemed fresh to me: new faces large library and physics lab etc. i breathed the air of college greedily i was curious about everything.the class given by the teachers are e_cellent.they provide us with information not only from our te_tbook but from other sources as well.i actively involved in student union and varies of association. but soon i realized that i do not make full use of my spare time so i got a part-time job to help a junior student with math lessons besidesi also took part in activities concerning public welfare. we taught the kids there who could not afford school i was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn the precious e_perience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility on the shoulders of us--future teachers. the enrichment of e_perience taught me the significance of modestyresponsibilitytoleranceand perseverance.
and now i have been here two years. recalling to the two years i think i have to talk about one thing--learning. learn how to study independently learn how to get along with others learn to love learn to… oh there are too much things we have to learn.
comparing with senior high school college is a rather different place. there aren’t so many people to watch you and guide you how to do something any more neither are there so many students who share with you one dream. in college you must think and study yourself so you have to learn and practice to control yourself.
another relationship in college is friendship. my roommates have lived two years with me. in these years they forgive my faults cry with me laugh with me play with me… they always stand with me and support me i have learned a lot from them. i love them all and treasure the friendship with them.
in the ne_t 2 yearsi’ll try my best to and make great contributions to society! that’s my college life. i cherish all i have e_perienced in college. i love you my college!
that’s all thank you!

生活的英語(yǔ)演講稿life is a choice
in our daily lives,we have many choices to make, such as what to eat for supper, what clothes to wear,or what to do on weekends. at certain times in our lives,we need to make even more critical choices, such as which school to attend, what job to take or who to choose as husband or wife.
yes, life is a mater of choice. seemingly,it means a choice of tangible things. but in essence,it means choosing a way of life. life is to be lived, saved, and enjoyed, not to be wasted or complained about. hardly can we forget the time when our society faced the grave threat from the life-and-death disease-sars. yet, even during those dreadful times, some afflicted people remained optimistic. instead of wearing neutral white masks, some people turned to colorful ones and thus display a happy mood. and some creative people dubbed sars to mean“smile and remain smiling .” i was deeply touched by their optimistic, nearly forgetting that we are still in a battle, people who survive these kinds of circumstances, decide in their minds to carry on in spite of the overwhelming odds.
laid-off workers typically regarded as the victims of economic advancement, are subject to desperation that being unemployed has brought on them. but encouragingly,we have witnessed some of them striving hard to rebuild confidence toward life and discover new opportunities for demonstrating their values.
although we cannot choose our appearance, inborn gifts and even avoid une_pected disasters and adversities,we do have the privilege to choose to live optimistically,to love our lives,to have dreams, and to cherish hopes.
every morning when we get up,we have a choice of how we want to approach life that day. as for me,i choose to be cheerful.

thirty college students across the country attended the tenth 21st century cup national english speaking contest in beijing on april 10. eventually, _ia peng, from nanjing university was named the champion. the second and third places went to zhang jing, a sophomore from china foreign affairs university, and zhang a _u, from hong kong polytechnic university, respectively. more than 1000 college students in beijing are lucky birds to listen to the speeches on the spot in friendship hotel.
just make to it the finals, they had to get past 60 others speaking on "the impact of globalization on traditional chinese values". that was at the semi-final on april 8-9. what will chinese college students think about the impact? each contestant had his own take on the subject. _ia summed up globalization by saying: "it’s just controversial and hard to say whether it is good or bad." _ia took the old wall of his city, nanjing, as a metaphor. he spoke about the conflict over whether to protect the old walls or tear them down to represent the conflict of ideas. he suggested that people protect the wall as a valuable relic while tearing down the "intangible walls" of their minds that prevent communication. while some other students are more focusing on the impact of globalization on family relations, attitudes towards love, and job-hunting.
over the past 10 years, the national english speaking competition has given contestants a chance to speak on a variety of topics closely related to their lives. chinese students become more open-minded and receive various ideas and thinking over the decade. diversity becomes more obvious on campus, students have more opportunities to e_press and show themselves. it’s not an easy task for the contestants to win through the fierce competition. owning to their passion, hard work and persistence, they finally succeeded in the contest.
liu _in, the first champion of the national contest, is now an anchorperson of cctv-9. recalling the passion of study on campus, she said: "when you want to e_press your idea by a foreign language without finding a right way, you’re really upset. then you have to encourage yourself, and after a long term of bitterness, suddenly you find you get the right way with joy." with the champion title in 21st century cup, liu attended the international public speaking competition in london in may 1996 afterward and got the first prize historically.
the winner in 2003 surprised the audience, since she came from accounting major instead of english major. gu qiubei, then 22 years old, was a senior in shanghai foreign studies university. while being asked whether she had some good methods to learn english, she said: "learn english with passion and enthusiasm." attracted by the greatness of english language, gu even changed her major from accounting to english in her postgraduate study. the most important issue in english learning process she pointed out is personal interests. only people interested in english benefit a lot from the learning methods and those with passion will finally achieve their dreams.
when chief of global media giant viacom sumner redstone gave a speech in tsinghua university on his autobiography a passion to win, he was asked what made him to restart his career at the age of 60, the 81-year-old media tycoon said: "firstly, there’s a self-driving force in my deep heart, which keeps my passion to succeed and surpass others; secondly, i don’t think i’m too old to leave work, actually i love my work very much."
some of the contestants have achieved their dreams as redstone; still others are on the way to their dream. with a passion to win, you will overcome obstacles and succeed at the end.
i’m studying in a city that’s famous for its walls. people who visit my city are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, especially when silhouetted against the setting sun with gold, shining streaks. the old, cracked bricks are covered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still for centuries.
our ancestors liked to build walls. they built walls in beijing, _i’an, nanjing and many other cities, and they built the great wall, which snakes across half our country. they built walls to protect against enemies and evil spirits. this tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public.
for a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world to me.
my perceptions, however, changed after i made a hiking trip to the eastern suburbs of my city. my classmates and i were walking with some foreign students. as we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, which formed a wide canopy above our heads. suddenly one foreign student asked me, "where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?"
"we’re already in the eastern suburbs," i replied. he seemed taken aback, "i thought you chinese had walls for everything." his remark set off a heated debate. at one point, he likened our walled cities to "jails", while i insisted that the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in china that had no walls.
that debate had no winners, but i did learn a lot from this student. for instance, he told me that some major universities like o_ford and cambridge were not surrounded by walls. i have to admit that we do have many walls in china, and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whether they are physical or intangible. we will keep some walls but tear down those that impede our development.
let me give another e_ample.
a year ago, when i was working on a term paper, i needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. however, the librarian coldly rejected my request to borrow it, saying, "you can’t borrow this book, you’re not a student here." in the end, i had to spend 200 yuan to buy a copy. meanwhile, the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf.
at the beginning of this semester, i heard that my university had started to think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at other universities, so my e_perience wouldn’t be repeated. barriers would be replaced by bridges. an inter-library loan system would give us access to books from any library. with globalization and china integrated into the world, i believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.
i know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. but one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to china’s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to e_amine their role in the modern world.
and how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities? should we tear them down? definitely not. my city, like beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. these walls attract historians, archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history and cultural heritage. walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. if the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls. they are now bridges that link east and west, south and north, and all countries of the world. our cultural heritage will survive globalization.

the topic of my speech is budgeting for life, get ready from this moment from this penny.
some day i went shopping with my roommates, after leaving the check-out counter, i picked one item from a girl’s bag and asked her: ‘hey, it’s pretty wrapped up. how much? ’ after long pause with no response, shamefully she said ‘beats me, i seldom care prices.’ the talk was over then there came the one deserved thinking ---- when we go into raptures at the sight of lu_uries, have we ever thought of our finance management?
ladies and gentlemen,
these years, under parents’ loving care, college students have taken purchase for granted. however, independent survival’s just around the corner. when youths hanging out in starbucks over a cup of coffee, when we lavishly squandering parental sponsor on brand names, when financial ability falling into neglect in te_tbooks, when the financial crisis engulfing the entire world, real life’s airing alarms. the ability in well managing finance matters relates to not only our present living condition, but also our future ideal realization. here thanks to this arena that i can share with you what i’ve learned during college life on finance management.
initially, for us students, a penny saved is a penny earned. lu_uries make us happy, but we need to balance whether these fancy goods are worth the price. actually it’s easy to save money. just make a list of what we have to pay for each month, such as your meal card, transportation card and other basic e_penses. apart from the list, set aside some money for your preferable entertainment or social contact as planned. only well budget for today can we well budget for future. particularly, be honest to your finance plan and we’ll see.
what follows is study comes first. distinct performance on study brings generous scholarship. it’s crystal clear what students should do during schooling so why not fulfill our duty? maybe in business one could work hard with no gains, but in university one’s efforts on study can always be paid off, with high respect and good reward. what’s more, study of investment and finance theories guides us to make rational use of resources on the right track.
besides, part-time job is ought to be part of our college life. in terms of money management, part-time job teaches us how challenging to earn money and helps develop thriftiness. in addition, concurrently holding a job and study cultivates us to make sensible use of our time as well as our money. furthermore, we might as well set foot in investment market, not for ___ a fortune, but for more understanding in case of future need.
now we are students supported by family, but the day we have to make living and manage life by ourselves will come eventually. till now i have gained more than twenty thousand rmb from scholarship and part-time jobs and as far as you are willing to, you can be better. we always say opportunity knocks at one’s door that is well-prepared. finance practice in university is the best internship to get ready for future financial challenges.
ladies and gentlemen, from now on, please reflect on ourselves, stop hankering after material comfort and unrealistic compare. attempt to count every cent and make every cent count, because the future we seek for is well worth today’s efforts.

enjoy yourself while fulfilling responsibility
in my 18 years of life, there have been many things. university days are the best part of them. i can never forget the days when i stepped into my university. i was impressed by its garden-like campus, its enthusiastic students and especially its learning atmosphere. i at once fell in love with it.
after the arduous military training, i get absolutely absorbed in my studies. the classes given by the teachers are e_cellent. they provide us with information not only from our te_tbooks but from many other sources as well. they easily arouse my insatiable desire to take in as much as i can.
frankly speaking, at first i had some difficulty following the teachers. however, through my own efforts and thanks to my teachers" guidance, i made remarkable progress. now i"ve benefited a lot from lectures and many other academic reports.
learning is a long process; i"ll keep e_ploring in the treasure house of knowledge to enrich myself. this summer i got out of the ivory tower and entered the real world. a publishing house offered me a part-time job in compilation and revision.
at the beginning i was belittled by my colleagues. but they were really surprised when i translated seven english articles over 5,000 words on only one day. gradually, they began to look at me with respectful eyes. in their opinion i turned out to be a useful and trustworthy colleague.
i also realize that only those who bring happiness for others can be truly happy. so i often take part in activities concerning public welfare. i once went to a barren mountain village with my classmates. we taught the kids there who could not afford school. while showing them how broad and how civilized the outer world is, i was deeply touched by their eagerness to learn, their honesty and their purity. i couldn"t control my tears on the day when we left. the precious e_perience with the poor kids made me aware of the responsibility on the shoulders of us, future teachers.
besides study and social practice, there are entertainments as well. i do body building every day, hoping to keep healthy and energetic. we also write a play and put it on in our spare time.
campus life is the most splendid time. but different people have different choices. the majority of students cherish their beautiful season and cherish the hope that one day they"ll become outstanding. but there are indeed some students still under ignorance. they gather together for eating, drinking or playing cards. they"re busy in searching for a girlfriend or a boyfriend. they forget completely about their mission as college students and the hope of their motherland.
finally, i do hope everybody can try their best to become a worthy citizen of the country. i do hope everybody can become the backbone of our nation and make great contributions to society!

what i thought i would do is i would start with a simple request. i"d like all of you to pause for a moment, you wretched weaklings, and take stock of your miserable e_istence.
now that was the advice that st. benedict gave his rather startled followers in the fifth century. it was the advice that i decided to follow myself when i turned 40. up until that moment, i had been that classic corporate warrior -- i was eating too much, i was drinking too much, i was working too hard and i was neglecting the family. and i decided that i would try and turn my life around.
in particular, i decided i would try to address the thorny issue of work-life balance. so i stepped back from the workforce, and i spent a year at home with my wife and four young children. but all i learned about work-life balance from that year was that i found it quite easy to balance work and life when i didn"t have any work. (laughter) not a very useful skill, especially when the money runs out.
so i went back to work, and i"ve spent these seven years since struggling with, studying and writing about work-life balance. and i have four observations i"d like to share with you today. the first is: if society"s to make any progress on this issue, we need an honest debate. but the trouble is so many people talk so much rubbish about work-life balance.
all the discussions about fle_i-time or dress-down fridays or paternity leave only serve to mask the core issue, which is that certain job and career choices are fundamentally incompatible with being meaningfully engaged on a day-to-day basis with a young family.
now the first step in solving any problem is acknowledging the reality of the situation you"re in. and the reality of the society that we"re in is there are thousands and thousands of people out there leading lives of quiet, screaming desperation, where they work long, hard hours at jobs they hate to enable them to buy things they don"t need to impress people they don"t like.
it"s my contention that going to work on friday in jeans and [a] t-shirt isn"t really getting to the nub of the issue.
the second observation i"d like to make is we need to face the truth that governments and corporations aren"t going to solve this issue for us. we should stop looking outside. it"s up to us as individuals to take control and responsibility for the type of lives that we want to lead.
if you don"t design your life, someone else will design it for you, and you may just not like their idea of balance. it"s particularly important -- this isn"t on the world wide web, is it? i"m about to get fired -- it"s particularly important that you never put the quality of your life in the hands of a commercial corporation. now i"m not talking here just about the bad companies -- the "abattoirs of the human soul," as i call them.
i"m talking about all companies. because commercial companies are inherently designed to get as much out of you [as] they can get away with. it"s in their nature; it"s in their dna; it"s what they do -- even the good, well-intentioned companies. on the one hand, putting childcare facilities in the workplace is wonderful and enlightened.
on the other hand, it"s a nightmare -- it just means you spend more time at the bloody office.we have to be responsible for setting and enforcing the boundaries that we want in our life.
the third observation is we have to be careful with the time frame that we choose upon which to judge our balance. before i went back to work after my year at home, i sat down and i wrote out a detailed, step-by-step description of the ideal balanced day that i aspired to. and it went like this: wake up well rested after a good night"s sleep. have se_. walk the dog. have breakfast with my wife and children. have se_ again.
drive the kids to school on the way to the office. do three hours" work. play a sport with a friend at lunchtime. do another three hours" work. meet some mates in the pub for an early evening drink. drive home for dinner with my wife and kids. meditate for half an hour. have se_. walk the dog. have se_ again. go to bed.
how often do you think i have that day? (laughter) we need to be realistic. you can"t do itall in one day. we need to elongate the time frame upon which we judge the balance in our life, but we need to elongate it without falling into the trap of the "i"ll have a life when i retire, when my kids have left home, when my wife has divorced me, my health is failing, i"ve got no mates or interests left." a day is too short; "after i retire" is too long. there"s got to be a middle way.
a fourth observation: we need to approach balance in a balanced way. a friend came to see me last year -- and she doesn"t mind me telling this story -- a friend came to see me last year and said, "nigel, i"ve read your book. and i realize that my life is completely out of balance. it"s totally dominated by work. i work 10 hours a day; i commute two hours a day. all of my relationships have failed. there"s nothing in my life apart from my work. so i"ve decided to get a grip and sort it out. so i joined a gym."
now i don"t mean to mock, but being a fit 10-hour-a-day office rat isn"t more balanced; it"s more fit. (laughter) lovely though physical e_ercise may be, there are other parts to life -- there"s the intellectual side; there"s the emotional side; there"s the spiritual side. and to be balanced, i believe we have to attend to all of those areas -- not just do 50 stomach crunches.
now that can be daunting. because people say, "bloody hell mate, i haven"t got time to get fit. you want me to go to church and call my mother." and i understand. i truly understand how that can be daunting. but an incident that happened a couple of years ago gave me a new perspective.
my wife, who is somewhere in the audience today, called me up at the office and said, "nigel, you need to pick our youngest son" -- harry -- "up from school." because she had to be somewhere else with the other three children for that evening. so i left work an hour early that afternoon and picked harry up at the school gates. we walked down to the local park, messed around on the swings, played some silly games. i then walked him up the hill to the local cafe, and we shared a pizza for two, then walked down the hill to our home, and i gave him his bath and put him in his batman pajamas. i then read him a chapter of roald dahl"s "james and the giant peach."
i then put him to bed, tucked him in, gave him a kiss on his forehead and said, "goodnight, mate," and walked out of his bedroom. as i was walking out of his bedroom, he said, "dad?" i went, "yes, mate?" he went, "dad, this has been the best day of my life, ever." i hadn"t done anything, hadn"t taken him to disney world or bought him a playstation.
now my point is the small things matter. being more balanced doesn"t mean dramatic upheaval in your life. with the smallest investment in the right places, you can radically transform the quality of your relationships and the quality of your life. moreover, i think, it can transform society.
because if enough people do it, we can change society"s definition of success away from the moronically simplistic notion that the person with the most money when he dies wins, to a more thoughtful and balanced definition of what a life well lived looks like. and that, i think, is an idea worth spreading.

presently, a new lifestyle called low carbon life is spreading every corner of our country. the concepts of low carbon are low energy and no waste. it is such a significant project that i can‘t wait to present my ideas on how to promote it.
on the first place, a no-car day is supposed to set up every week in our school. because cars not only cause serious air pollution but also waste energy. on no-car day, neither students nor teachers are allowed to drive to school. meanwhile, just walk, jump, cycle or run. use our legs and enjoy the fun.
on the second place, we had best not use plastic bags any more. no one can stand the "white pollution"。 so, it is wise to use bags which can be reused again and again. finally, one thing that we should keep in mind: every big thing comes from the subtle. therefore, as students, we ought to turn out the lights the moment we leave, turn off the tap in time, and reuse our te_tbook and so on.
all in all, it weighs greatly for all of us to put the low carbon lifestyle into practice. just set our mind to these: no-car day, no plastic bags, and no waste. let‘s do it now.
