crossing the sea

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. the title of my speech today is "crossing the sea" . an english poet by the name of rudyard kipling once wrote in this poem "we and they" :

all the people like us are we

and everyone else is they

we live over the sea

while they live over the way

we eat pork and beef with cow horn-handled knives

they who gobble their rice off a leaf

are horrified out of their lives.

when these lines first caught my eyes, i was shocked--how could two people remain so isolated and ignorant of each other in the past? today′s society, of course, is an entirely different picture. those people who used to eat with gobble their rice might be as well have taken to fish and chips.

indeed, just take china as e_ample; our modern life has been influenced by western style of living in so many ways that it′s no longer surprising to see teenagers going crazy about rock-and-roll, whole families dining out at mcdonald′s and even rather elderly people dressed in apple jeans.

however, these are only some e_pressions of the cultural changes taking place in our society today. what is really going on is a subtle but significant restructuring of the nation′s mentality. just look around.

how many college graduates are ready to compete aggressively for every job opportunity, whereas not long ago they were asked just to sit idle and wait for whatever was to be assigned to them by the government?

how many young people are now eager to seek for an independent life whereas only two decades ago they would rely totally on their parents to arrange for their future? ask anyone who participates in today′s speech contest. who has not come with a will to fight and who has not come determined to achieve self-fulfillment in winning the game? and i′m quite certain that if confucius had lived to see today′s china, he would have been horrified to see young lovers kissing each other in public places in an unreserved e_pression of their passion.

it is therefore evident that we as descendants of an ancient eastern civilization are already living under strong influence of the western culture. but it is not only in china that we find the incorporation of the two cultures.

take the united states as an e_ample: during the 1980s, in face of the overwhelming competition from japan, many american companies such as the ford began to adopt a teamwork management from their rivals, the essence of which, lay at the very core of eastern culture.

take the chinese acupuncture as another e_ample: this traditional treatment of diseases is finally finding its way to the west and hence the underlying notion that illness is resulted from the imbalance between yin and yang within the body--an idea which would strike any westerner as incredible in the past!

ladies and gentlemen, we live in a great epoch when the global integration of economy and the information revolution have brought cultures of the world closer than ever before. we live in a particular era when countries, east and west, find themselves in need of readjusting their traditional values. we live, at the same time, at a critical juncture of our evolution because such problems as ethnic conflicts and regional unrest are increasingly posing a threat to the peace and happiness of the whole human race.to cope with such an era and to embrace an even brighter future, we need to learn to live more harmoniously in a world community which is becoming smaller and smaller. my dear fellow students, our command of the english language render sit possible for us to gain an insight into western culture while retaining our own cultural identity.

therefore, it is our sacred responsibility to promote the cultural e_changes and hence the mutual understanding between china and the rest of the world.

it is my happiest dream that new generation of chinese will not only grow up drinking coca cola and watching hollywood, but also be blessed with the far-reaching benefits of multiple cultures; benefits that our forefathers had never, ever dreamed of.

to end my speech, i would like to quote rudyard kipling again:

all the people like us are we

and everyone else is they

but once you cross over the sea

you will end by looking on we

as only a sort of they.

thank you.

女士們,先生們,我們恰逢一個(gè)偉大的時(shí)代:全球經(jīng)濟(jì)一體化、信息革命使得世界各種文化聯(lián)系比以往更加緊密;

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:

when i was in the primary school, i have a dream. i want to invent a device which could bring you from one place to another in no time at all. when i was in the secondary school, my dream was to study in my ideal university. and when eventually i got into the university, my dream was to graduate.

ladies and gentlemen, the reality is not real. it is a barrier keeping us from all the possible fantasies. flying, for e_ample, had been a dream to mankind for thousands of years. a hundred years ago, "man could not fly" was still regarded as the "reality". now if that was really the reality, what did the wright brothers do? how did some of you get to macau? only when we believe that the reality is not real can we soar with our dreams.

have you ever bought any food on the train? and do you ask for the receipt after buying it? nowadays, all trains in china provide its passengers with receipts for commodities, but 7 years ago, things were quite different.

on 13th of october, 20__, the train t109 from beijing to shanghai was speeding on the railway. a graduate student bought a sausage at 1 yuan on the train, then asked for a receipt.

“are you kidding? it’s just one yuan!” the crew member was surprised.

the student, however, answered in a determined voice, “i paid the money, so i deserve the receipt.”

“but we never give receipts on the train.’ as a result, his further request was turned down by a cold shoulder.

several days later, the student sued the national railway ministry, for not providing receipts for passengers.

to his dismay, the court turned down the case for lack of evidence. but he, who majored in law at that time, believed law as a most powerful weapon, so he did not give up. instead, he began his journey of collecting first-hand evidence by taking trains and buying commodities aboard. when his classmates were playing soccer, he was taking the train; when his classmates were buying food at mcdonald’s, he was buying food on the train; when his classmates were asking girls out, he was asking for the receipts. as he joked, ‘i was either taking the train or on the way to take the train.’

one month later, he appeared in the court again, with newly-collected evidence and a stronger confidence. and i guess, ladies and gentlemen, you will all cheer for the result because this time, the student won the case. very soon, a regulation about receipts on the train came out. and whatever we buy on the train now, there’s a receipt for us.

outside the court, the student was asked, “how do you make it to the end?” he said, “as a law student, i root my faith in law. i believe that law is there, to protect every person with no e_ception, and to ensure every person has a say.”

his words spread a strong faith in law, which is not only a doctrine of a law student, but also a belief that all citizens ought to hold. it is this faith that initiates the student to resort to law for a tiny issue; it is this faith that supports him to endure all the e_hausting trips when collecting evidence; it is this faith that makes a seemingly “ridiculous” receipt request legal and rightful. it is this faith that helps to change our life, enhance our judicial system and bring social justice.

to many, a receipt of 1 yuan is too small to mention, however rights are to be respected and law is to be believed in. it all starts with a tiny receipt of 1 yuan, but we get a monumental case, a new regulation and a bumper harvest in social justice. the bridge that leads a tiny start to a bumper harvest is faith, the faith in law, rightful and strong.

a scene to remember

gu qiubei

shanghai international studies university

advisor: gong longsheng

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.

today i would like to begin with a story.

there was once a physical therapist(臨床醫(yī)學(xué)家) who traveled all the way from america to africa to do a census(調(diào)查) about mountain gorillas(大猩猩). these gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of poaching(偷獵) and being put into the zoo. she went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. she witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we"ve ever been, where in the very depth of the african rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddled(擁抱) their babies.

yes, that"s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in the mist, based on a true story of mrs. dian fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in rwanda to protect the eco-environment there until the very end of her life.

to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless(永恒的) reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our eco-environment.

today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. on the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. it has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in gdp growth. it has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. but on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren"t natural anymore. deforestation to heat lodges is devastating nepal. oil spills from tourist boats are polluting antarctica. tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to u2 on walkman and wear nike and reeboks.

all these appalling(令人震驚的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been eroding(侵蝕) our resources. encouragingly, the e_plosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the united nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world"s attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our eco-environment.

now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and invalids(殘疾人), some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. these are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. why? because they care, because they still want their mother nature back. because they know it still belongs to them.

this kind of feeling that i have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it"s all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish.

the other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. i found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been e_cept the deer.

and all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it"s lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.

once again, i have come to think of mrs. dian fossey be- cause it"s with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our eco-environment that we are taking our ne_t step into the world.

and no matter who we are what we do and where we go, in our mind, there"s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it. thank you very much.

the doors that are open to us

good morning ladies and gentlemen:

the title of my speech today is "the doors that are open to us ".

the other day my aunt paid me a visit. she was overjoyed. "i got the highest mark in the mid-term e_amination!" she said. don"t be surprised! my aunt is indeed a student; to be e_act, a college student at the age of 45.

last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college. "this was the wisest decision i have ever made," she said proudly like a teenage girl. to her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.

east and west have met

runner-up: rui cheng gang, foreign affair college

honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:

kipling said:" east is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet!" but now, a century later, they have met.

they have met in business. they have met in education. they have met in the arts.

some would argue that these meetings leave us with a choice between east and west ,but i believe the best future lies in the creative combination of both worlds. we can make western ideas, customs and technology our own, and adapt them to our own use. we can enjoy the best of all worlds, because our tradition is, above all, one of selecting the best and making it our own.

but, do western styles and values threaten our identity?

history makes it easy for us to think so-perhaps too easy.

some people seem to think that adopting western customs, such as a bride wearing white-which has long been a color of mourning in china, instead of the traditional chinese red for her wedding, is another submission to foreign intervention,--a betrayal of our heritage, they say.

they fear that as we become "globalized", we will no longer be chinese.

i do not agree.

history teachers that a strong and confident nation is at ease in hearing from the outside world.

the wedding of eastern and western cultures, whether in white gowns or red, brings us variety.

it is a rich banquet of special foods from all over the world.

as an amateur gourmet of chinese cuisine, our superb flavours delight me.

but my chinese taste appreciates food from any land.

i even allow the convenience of mcdonald"s a place in my life without giving up my good taste.

my grandfather taught me to hum tunes of beijing opera from the time i was very young; they are deep in my spirit, part of my soul.

i love beijing opera, because it always reminds me of who i am.

but i am also a fan of modern pop music, the no.1 fan of spice girls on campus.

of course, it goes far beyond food, music and dance. it goes into values and ways of thinking about the world.

once upon a time, or so my teacher told me, a chinese boy and an american girl had a squabble.

both wanted to keep a bunny rabbit they had found in the garden.

surely you"ve seen a rabbit sunning himself in the grass.

nothing is more lovable, nothing more natural. no wonder they wanted him.

the chinese boy played his er-hu. happiness and joy, longing and passion, filled the air. the little rabbit swayed gently and began to move his ears in the direction of the music. he liked what he heard.

the girl then took out her violin and played it to produce beautiful melodies of her own.

the rabbit began to bounce in her direction.

so intent were the children on their own music that neither paid the other any attention.

the competing melodies confused the little rabbit and he did not know which way to turn .unable to attract the little creature, both children gave up ;they walked away, in different directions, leaving the rabbit. . .alone.

but, what if they listened ,what if they really heard each other"s music, instead of always playing their own tunes?

when i hear the music of a violin ,rich with the joys of men and women who came together and sang and danced.. . i hear echoes of the music of the grass lands, of the hills, of the rivers...of my own native land.

is music mine and yours, or is it ours?

what i want to hear is the er-hu and the violin played together, in rhythm and in tune. together, we can produce new and beautiful music, rich with te_tures and sounds that can only be made in harmony.

the rabbit sits in the grass in the ever-warming sun. waiting for us to play, waiting for the symphony to begin.

will he have to wait forever? the choice is ours . thank you.

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. today i would like to begin with a story.

yes, that"s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in the mist, based on a true story of mrs. dian fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.

to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.

all these 7) appalling(令人震驚的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蝕) our resources. encouragingly, the e_plosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the united nations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world"s attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.

now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(殘疾人), some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. these are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. why? because they care. because they still want their mother nature back. because they know it still belongs to them.

this kind of feeling that i have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it"s all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish.

the other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. i found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been e_cept the deer.

and all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it"s lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.

once again, i have come to think of mrs. dian fossey be- cause it"s with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our ne_t step into the world.

and no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there"s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

thank you very much.

good morning ladies and gentlemen:

the title of my speech today is "the doors that are open to us ".

the other day my aunt paid me a visit. she was overjoyed. "i got the highest mark in the mid-term e_amination!" she said. don’t be surprised! my aunt is indeed a student; to be e_act, a college student at the age of 45.

last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college. "this was the wisest decision i have ever made," she said proudly like a teenage girl. to her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.

"compared with the late 70s," she says, "now college students have many doors." my aunt cannot help but recall her first college e_perience in 1978 when college doors began to be re-opened after the cultural revolution. she was assigned to study engineering despite her desire to study chinese literature, and a few years later, the government sent her to work in a tv factory.

i was shocked when she first told me how she (had) had no choice in her major and job. look at us today! so many doors are open to us! i believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today. and my aunt told me that we should reach our goals by grasping all these opportunities.

the first door i see is the opportunity to study different kinds of subjects that interest us. my aunt said she was happy to study management, but she was also happy that she could attend lectures on ancient chinese poetry and on shakespearean drama. as for myself, i am english major, but i may also go to lectures on history. to me, if college education in the past emphasized specialization, now, it emphasizes free and well-round

ed development of each individual. so all the fine achievements of human civilization are open to us.

the second door is the door to the outside world. learning goes beyond classrooms and national boundaries. my aunt remembers her previous college days as monotonous and even calls her generation "frogs in a well." but today, as the world becomes a global village, it is important that our neighbors and we be open-minded to learn with and from each other. i have many fellow international classmates, and i am applying to an e_change program with a university abroad. as for my aunt, she is planning to get an mba degree in the united kingdom where her daughter, my cousin, is now doing her master’s degree in biochemistry. we are now taking the opportunity to study overseas, and when we come back, we’ll put to use what we have learnt abroad.

the third door is the door to lifelong learning. as new ideas appear all the time, we always need to acquire new knowledge, regardless of our age. naturally, my aunt herself is the best e_ample. many of my aunt’s contemporaries say that she is amazingly up-to-date for a middle-aged woman. she simply responds, "age doesn’t matter. what matters is your attitude. you may think it’s strange that i am still going to college, but i don’t think i’m too old to learn." yes, she is right. since the government removed the age limit for college admissions in __, there are already some untraditional students, sitting with us in the same classrooms. like these people, my aunt is old but she is very young in spirit. with her incredible energy and determination, she embodies both tradition and modernity.

the doors open to us also pose challenges. for instance, we are faced with the challenge of a balanced learning, the challenge of pre

serving our fine tradition while learning from the west, and the challenge of learning continuously while carrying heavy responsibilities to our work and family. so, each door is a test of our courage, ability and judgment, but with the support of my teachers, parents, friends and my aunt, i believe i can meet the challenge head on. when i reach my aunt’s age, i can be proud to say that i have walked through dozens of doors and will, in the remainder of my life, walk through many more. possibly i will go back to college, too.

thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.

《全國英語演講比賽冠軍演講稿:the doors that are open to us》

arnold schwarzenegger:

thank you very much. thank you.

what a greeting. what a greeting. wow!

this -- this is like winning an oscar. as if i would know! speaking of acting, one of my movies was called "true lies." and thats what the democrats should have called their convention.

you know, on the way up here to the podium, a gentlemen came up to me and said, "governor, you are as good a politician as you were an actor." what a cheap shot. cannot believe it.

anyway, my fellow americans, this is an amazing moment for me. to think that a once scrawny boy from austria could grow up to become governor of the state of california and then stand here -- and stand here in madison square garden and speak on behalf of the president of the united states. that is an immigrants dream! its the american dream.

you know, i was born in europe and ive traveled all over the world, and i can tell you that there is no place, no country, that is more compassionate, more generous, more accepting, and more welcoming than the united states of america.

as long as i live -- as long as i live, i will never forget the day 21 years ago when i raised my right hand and i took the oath of citizenship. you know how proud i was? i was so proud that i walked around with the american flag around my shoulder all day long.

tonight, i want to talk to you about why im even more proud to be an american -- why i am proud to be a republican, and why i believe that this country is in good hands.

when i was a boy, the soviets occupied part of austria. i saw their tanks in the streets. i saw communism with my own eyes. i remember the fear we had when we had to cross into the soviet sector. growing up, we were told, "dont look the soldiers in the eye. just look straight ahead." it was common belief that the soviet soldiers could take a man out of his own car and ship him back to the soviet union as slave labor.

now my family didnt have a car -- but one day we were in my uncles car. it was near dark as we came to the soviet checkpoint. i was a little boy. i was not an action hero back then. but i remember -- i remember how scared i was that the soldiers would pull my father or my uncle out of the car and i would never see them again. my family and so many others lived in fear of the soviet boot. today, the world no longer fears the soviet union and it is because of the united states of america!

as a kid -- as a kid i saw socialist -- the socialist country that austria became after the soviets left. now dont misunderstand me: i love austria and i love the austrian people. but i always knew that america was the place for me. in school, when the teacher would talk about america, i would daydream about coming here. i would daydream about living here. i would sit there and watch for hours american movies, transfi_ed by my heroes, like john wayne. everything about america -- everything about america seemed so big to me, so open, so possible.

i finally arrived here in 1968. what a special day it was. i remember i arrived here with empty pockets, but full of dreams, full of determination, full of desire. the presidential campaign was in full swing. i remember watching the ni_on and humphrey presidential race on tv. a friend of mine who spoke german and english translated for me. i heard humphrey saying things that sounded like socialism, which i had just left. but then i heard ni_on speak. then i heard ni_on speak. he was talking about free enterprise, getting the government off your back, lowering the ta_es and strengthening the military.

listening to ni_on speak sounded more like a breath of fresh air. i said to my friend, i said, "what party is he?" my friend said, "hes a republican." i said, "then i am a republican." and i have been a republican ever since! and trust me -- and trust me in my wifes family, thats no small achievement. but i am proud to be with the party of abraham lincoln, the party of teddy roosevelt, the party of ronald reagan and the party of george w. bush!

to my fellow immigrants listening tonight, i want you to know how welcome you are in this party. we republicans admire your ambition. we encourage your dreams. we believe in you[r] future. and one thing i learned about america is that if you work hard and if you play by the rules, this country is truly open to you. you can achieve anything.

everything i have -- my career, my success, my family -- i owe to america.

in this country, it doesnt make any difference where you were born. it doesnt make any difference who your parents were. it doesnt make any difference if youre like me and you couldnt even speak english until you were in your twenties.

america gave me opportunities and my immigrant dreams came true. i want other people to get the same chances i did, the same opportunities. and i believe they can. thats why i believe in this country. thats why i believe in this party, and thats why i believe in this president.

now, many of you out there tonight are "republican" like me -- in your hearts and in your belief. maybe youre from guatemala. maybe youre from the philippines. maybe youre from europe or the ivory coast. maybe you live in ohio, pennsylvania, or new me_ico. and maybe -- and maybe, just maybe, you dont agree with this party on every single issue. i say to you tonight that i believe thats not only okay, but thats whats great about this country. here -- here we can respectfully disagree and still be patriotic, still be american, and still be good republicans.

my fellow immigrants, my fellow americans, how do you know if you are a republican? well, i[ll] tell you how.

if you believe that government should be accountable to the people, not the people to the government, then you are a republican.

if you believe that a person should be treated as an individual, not as a member of an interest group, then you are a republican.

if you believe that your family knows how to spend your money better than the government does, then you are a republican.

if you believe that our educational system should be held accountable for the progress of our children, then you are a republican.

if you believe -- if you believe that this country, not the united nations, is best hope for democracy, then you are a republican.

and ladies and gentlemen -- and ladies and gentlemen, if you believe that we must be fierce and relentless and terminate terrorism, then you are a republican!

now theres another way you can tell youre [a] republican. you have faith in free enterprise, faith in the resourcefulness of the american people, and faith in the u.s. economy. and to those critics who are so pessimistic about our economy, i say: "dont be economic girlie men!"

the u.s. -- the u.s. economy remains the envy of the world. we have the highest economic growth of any of the worlds major industrialized nations. dont you remember the pessimism of 20 years ago when the critics said that japan and germany are overtaking the u.s.? ridiculous!

now they say that india and china are overtaking us. now dont you believe it. we may hit a few bumps -- but america always moves ahead. thats what americans do.

we move prosperity ahead -- we move prosperity ahead. we move freedom ahead. and we move people ahead. and under president bush and vice president cheney, americas economy is moving ahead in spite of the recession they inherited and in spite of the attack on our homeland.

now -- now the other party says that we are two americas. dont you believe that either. i have visited our troops in iraq, kuwait, bosnia, germany and all over the world. ive visited our troops in california, where they train before they go overseas. i have visited our military hospitals. and i tell you this: that our men and women in uniform do not believe there are two americas. they believe theres one america and they are fighting for it!

we are one america -- we are one america and president bush is defending it with all his heart and soul.

thats what i admire most about the president: he is a man of perseverance. hes a man of inner strength. hes a leader who doesnt flinch, who doesnt waiver, and does not back down.

my fellow americans -- my fellow americans, make no mistake about it: terrorism is more insidious than communism, because it yearns to destroy not just the individual, but the entire international order. the president did not go into iraq because the polls told him it was popular. as a matter of fact, the polls said just the opposite. but leadership isnt about polls. its about ma -- its about making decisions you think are right and then standing behind those decisions. thats why america is safer with george w. bush as president.

he knows -- he knows you dont reason with terrorists. you defeat them. he knows you cant reason with people blinded by hate. you see, they hate the power of the individual. they hate the progress of women. they hate the religious freedom of others. and they hate the liberating breeze of democracy. but ladies and gentlemen, their hate is no match for americas decency.

we are -- we are the america that sends out the peace corps volunteers to teach our village children. we are the america that sends out the missionaries and doctors to raise up the poor and the sick. we are the america that gives more than any other country to fight aids in africa and the developing world. and we are -- and we are the america that fights not for imperialism but for human rights and democracy.

you know, when the germans brought down the berlin wall, americas determination helped wield the sledgehammers. and when the lone, young chinese man stood in front of those tanks in tiananmen square, america stood with him. and when nelson mandela smiled in election victory after all those years in prison, america celebrated, too.

we are still the lamp lighting the world, especially [for] those who struggle. no matter in what labor camp they slave, no matter in what injustice theyre trapped, they hear our call; they see our light; and they feel the pull of our freedom.

they come here as i did because they believe. they believe in us. they come because their hearts say to them, as mine did, "if only i can get to america." you know, someone once wrote: "there are those who say that freedom is nothing but a dream." they are right. its the american dream.

no matter the nationality, no matter the religion, no matter the ethnic background, america brings out the best in people. and as governor -- as governor of the great state of california, i see the best in americans every day -- i see the best in americans everyday -- our police, our firefighters, our nurses, doctors, and teachers, our parents.

and what about the e_traordinary men and women who have volunteered to fight for the united states of america. i have such great respect for them and their heroic families.

let me tell you about a sacrifice and the commitment that i have seen firsthand. in one of the military hospitals i visited, i met a young guy who was in bad shape. hed lost a leg; he had a hole through his stomach, and his shoulder had been shot through, and the list goes on and on and on.

i could tell that there was no way he could ever return to combat. but when i asked him, "when do you think youll get out of the hospital?" he said to me, "sir, in three weeks." and you know what he said to me then? he said he was going to get a new leg, and then he was going to get some therapy, and then he was going to go back to iraq and fight alongside his buddies. and you know what he said to me then? you know what he said to me then? he said, "arnold, ill be back!"

well, ladies and gentlemen -- ladies and gentlemen, america is back. back from the attack on our homeland, back from the attack on our economy, and back from the attack on our way of life. we are back because of the perseverance, character, and leadership of the 43rd president of the united states, george w. bush!

my fellow americans, i want you to know that i believe with all my heart that america remains "the great idea" that inspires the world. it is a privilege to be born here. it is an honor to become a citizen here. it is a gift to raise your family here, to vote here and to live here.

our president, george w. bush, has worked hard to protect and preserve the american dream for all of us.

and thats why i say, send him back to washington for four more years!

four more years! four more years! four more years! four more years! for more years!

thank you, america. thank you and god bless you all. thank you. thank you.

as quoted from "how to make steel": the most precious thing to us is life. we can only live but once, thus, our life should be like this, when looking back, you don’t have to be regretful about those wasted time and shameful about the mediocre life. then till the end of his life, we can conclude that we have devoted our whole life to the most valuable thing in the world----dedication to human’s liberation. these sentences touch me most, and remind me to think about how we should live through our life, and what the most important thing in my life is! looking retrospectively about my past twenty years, lot’s of failures. but i know that the future is in my hand. there is one more important thing in my life is to cherish, cherish the person loves you and you love.

well, to be honest, i don’t think i was such kind of a filial daughter. because all i think about was to get away from then as far as possible, to free myself. i never have the feeling of homesick, even though when i stepped into my home and saw my lost-lost mother. in fact, my heart has been in self-approach.

but, what should i do? it seems strange for me to say " i love you" to them, because they don’t need those unpractical words, by the way, i’m not good at it. so i decided to concentrate myself on study to repay them, which seems to be passive. but today, one thing happened strengthened my feeling about them.

i have sore throat all these days. i didn’t take it serious, because i think it will recover soon. however, the condition became worse. e_cept headache, fever, runny nose, sore throat, slight tiredness, i was all right. to my disappointment, the latest clinic is being reconstructed, and i have no idea about other clinics. so i tended to my native friends for help, one was no answered, the other is shutdown. the first person hit upon my mind was my sister, who is far away from me. she did all she can to comfort me and give me suggestions. i didn’t realize it how touched i was as soon as i finished my conversation, my mother called me. i’ve been trying to ail myself, but without success, with large drops of tears rolling down upon my check. i can’t remember e_actly what’s it saying on the other side, my helpless, lonely heart was saved eventually. in order not to let her worry, i turned off it in a hurry. how uselei was! with the helping of my roommate, i went to see the doctor. and now i’m better.

this small incident teaches me that the most important in our life is to cherish the person you love and the person loves you. my friends, we can only live but once. why not cherish and repay those you’ve owned? don’t regret till we are old!

building bridges for the future

i’m studying in a city that’s famous for its walls. people who visit my city are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, especially when silhouetted against the setting sun with gold, shining streaks. the old, cracked bricks are covered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still for centuries.

our ancestors liked to build walls. they built walls in beijing, _i’an, nanjing and many other cities, and they built the great wall, which snakes across half our country. they built walls to protect against enemies and evil spirits. this tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public.

for a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world to me.

my perceptions, however, changed after i made a hiking trip to the eastern suburbs of my city. my classmates and i were walking with some foreign students. as we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, which formed a wide canopy above our heads. suddenly one foreign student asked me, "where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?"

"we’re already in the eastern suburbs," i replied. he seemed taken aback, "i thought you chinese had walls for everything." his remark set off a heated debate. at one point, he likened our walled cities to "jails", while i insisted that the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in china that had no walls.

that debate had no winners, but i did learn a lot from this student. for instance, he told me that some major universities like o_ford and cambridge were not surrounded by walls. i have to admit that we do have many walls in china, and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whether they are physical or intangible. we will keep some walls but tear down those that impede our development.

let me give another e_ample.

a year ago, when i was working on a term paper, i needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. however, the librarian coldly rejected my request to borrow it, saying, "you can’t borrow this book, you’re not a student here." in the end, i had to spend 200 yuan to buy a copy. meanwhile, the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf.

at the beginning of this semester, i heard that my university had started to think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at other universities, so my e_perience wouldn’t be repeated. barriers would be replaced by bridges. an inter-library loan system would give us access to books from any library. with globalization and china integrated into the world, i believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.

i know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. but one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to china’s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to e_amine their role in the modern world.

and how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities? should we tear them down? definitely not. my city, like beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. these walls attract historians, archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history and cultural heritage. walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. if the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls. they are now bridges that link east and west, south and north, and all countries of the world. our cultural heritage will survive globalization.

hello, everybody ! it is my great honor to be here and share my idea with you . today, i will talk something about dream——a worldchanging word.

“what do you think is the word that has really changed our world ?” when i was asked about this question for the first time ,without thinking a second time, a word flashed into my mind ——dream , d-r-e-a-m. people dream more or less about different things ,to be a teacher ,a doctor ,a scientist ,a businessman and so on .all the people who have dreams should be respected, because dreams make the world go around . we"re growing greater with our dreams. all big men are great dreamers in their youth. not only does everyone have a dream, but also everything starts as one’s daydream. martin luther king had a dream. he desired for a future where both blacks and whites would coe_ist harmoniously as equals. by speaking the way he did, he educated, he inspired, he informed not just the people there, but people throughout america and unborn generations. he pushed forward the pace of black american society to the racial equality .

thomas edison had a dream. he dreamed of a lamp that could be operated by electricity, begenning where he stood to put his dream into action, and despite more than ten thousand failures, he stood by that dream until he made it a physical reality! and today, his dream lights up the whole world at night.

walt disney had a dream, which, in itself, wasn"t unusual -- he was always dreaming. he dreamed of making the first animated feature film, and of building an amusement park where parents, together with their kids, could enjoy themselves. walt disney empowered his dream and today, disneyland, disney world and disney theme parks attract around the world thrill millions of visitors each year.

john f. kennedy had a dream. he wanted to land a man on the moon and return him safely to the earth so as to restore faith in the american way of life. john f.kennedy empowered his dream and 8 years later neil armstrong stepped on the face of the moon. the moon landing certainly gave americans a newly-founded confidence. dream --- a world-changing word? yes ,i will say so ,won"t you ? youth is a special life-relaying station , the growth with the worry ,the life feeling become aware happily with the dream ,collecting a unique youth melody here .

we decide. we choose. and as we decide and choose, our lives are formed. in the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about. and most important, we are the one we choose to be.

it is easy to waste our lives ,our days ,or our minutes .it is easy to e_ist than to live .so hold fast to your dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird, which cannot fly. hold fast to your dreams, for when dreams go away, life is a barren field, frozen with snow. i hope you,he,and i, everyone will have a dream!

thank you a lot.

facing this audience on the stage, i have the e_citing feeling of participating in the march of history, for what we are facing today is more than a mere competition or contest. it is an assembly of some of china"s most talented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that are preparing themselves for the coming of a new century.

i"m grateful that i"ve been given this opportunity, at such a historic moment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious look back at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for this nation as well.

though it is only within my power to tell about my personal e_perience, and only a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, i believe, the root of a spirit which has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past 15 years.

in my elementary years, there was a little girl in the class who worked very hard but somehow could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.

the teacher asked me to help her, and it was obvious that she e_pected a lot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, i always tried to evade her so as to get more time to enjoy myself.

one day before the final e_am, she came up to me and said, "could you please e_plain this to me? i want very much to do better this time. " i started e_plaining, and finished in a hurry. pretending not to notice her still confused eyes, i ran off quickly. nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the e_am. and two months later, at the beginning of the new semester, word came of her death of blood cancer. no one ever knew about the little task i failed to fulfill, but i couldn"t forgive myself. i simply couldn"t forget her eyes, which seem to be asking, "why didn"t you do a little more to help me, when it was so easy for you? why didn"t you understand a little better the trust placed in you, so that i would not have to leave this world in such pain and regret?"

i was about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a way it was the very starting point of my life, for i began to understand the word "responsibility" and to learn to always do my duties faithfully and devotedly, for the implications of that sacred word has dawned on me: the mutual need and trust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance which are the very foundation of human society.

later in my life, i continued to e_perience many failures. but never again did i feel that regret which struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes my heart satisfied to think that i have always done everything in my power to fulfill my responsibilities as best i can.

as i grew up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similar ones, i began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find that society, in a way, was in its formative years like myself. new buildings, new commodities and new fashions appear every day.

new ideas, new information, new technologies. people can talk with each other from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. society is becoming more competitive.

words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and more people are rewarded for their hard work and efforts. such is the era in which this generation ,grows and matures.

such is the era in which this generation will take over the nation from our fathers and learn to run it. yet in the meantime, many problems still e_ist.

we learn that crimes take place in broad daylight with crowds of people looking on and not assisting. we hear that there are still about 1 million children in this country who can"t even afford to go to elementary schools while enormous sums of money are being squandered away on dinner parties and lu_ury cars.

we buy shoddy medicines, or merely worthless junk in the name of medicines, that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many people believe, is the most important thing in the world that must be made, even at the e_pense of morality and responsibility.

such an era, therefore, determines that we are a generation with a keener sense of competition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think critically and act creatively.

such an era, furthermore, demands, that we are a generation with a clear perception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive will to take action and solve the problems. history has long been preparing these qualities in this generation and it is now calling us forward to give testimony to our patriotism and heroism towards this nation and all humanity.

standing here now, i think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinary student. probably i"ll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. but this doesn"t discourage me any, for i know that with my sense of responsibility and devoted efforts to always strive, for the best, it"s going to be a meaningful and worthwhile life that i will be living.

standing here now, i think of the past 15 years of this nation, which has achieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of whom will not attain fame or prestige and only a few of whom will be remembered by posterity. but that doesn"t discourage us any, because we know that the world watches, the world listens, the world is waiting to see where this nation will be heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce competition.

i can"t ever forget that little girl in my class who couldn"t had the same opportunities as any of us here to enjoy a wonderful life today and a hopeful world tomorrow.

it is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to the challenges of the new century and to devote our sweat and blood, our wisdom and passion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier land for every one of us.

we are not going to evade that responsibility. we are going to let people down. and people, far and near, will hear of us. frost will be brought to their backbones and tears to their eyes when our stories are told and retold, so let us go forth, my fellow members of this luckily chosen generation, and meet the new century in victory and glory.

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. today i would like to begin with a story.

there was once a physical 1) therapist who traveled all the way from america to africa to do a 2) census about mountain 3) gorillas. these gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of 4) poaching and being put into the zoo. she went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. she witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we"ve ever been, where in the very depth of the african rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5) cuddled their babies.

yes, that"s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in the mist, based on a true story of mrs. dian fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.

to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.

today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. on the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. it has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in gdp growth. it has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. but on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren"t natural anymore. deforestation to heat lodges is devastating nepal. oil spills from tourist boats are polluting antarctica. tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to u2 on walkman and wear nike and reeboks.

all these 7) appalling(令人震驚的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蝕) our resources.

encouragingly, the e_plosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the united nations has made __ the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world"s attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.

now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(殘疾人), some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. these are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. why? because they care. because they still want their mother nature back. because they know it still belongs to them.

this kind of feeling that i have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it"s all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish.

the other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. i found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been e_cept the deer.

and all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it"s lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation. once again, i have come to think of mrs. dian fossey be- cause it"s with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our ne_t step into the world.

and no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there"s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.

thank you very much.

thanks,contestant#18.the topic for your impromptu speech is:which is more important for you: knowledge from books or personal e_perience? answer: thank you. i remember, on my very first day of my beloved university, one of my professors said to me,"from now on, you’ll be on a journey between who you think you are and who yo can be.the key is to allow yourself to continue the journey in the ocean of the books."and i do learn a lot from books: i know the geometry of euclid, logic of

aristotle, fable of aesop known to children around the world. well, no offense to all those great authors of the books, but during my three years at my university, i do realize that personal e_perience through practice means more to me. as we are in this global information age where both economic growth and individual opportunity are based on ideas, a commitment to providing all human beings the golden opportunity to develop themselves is so vital, not only to the people here, but all around. as we are in this transformational age where communications and commerce are global, investments are mobile, technology is almost magical, and the ambition for a better life is now universal, and i think this is why we are here today. we want to earn our personal e_perience through practicing our oral english, sharing our opinions of tourism and ecology with all the judges and audience here. and i think we are so lucky to be alive at this moment of the history. never before have our nation enjoyed so much prospertity and so much social progress with so little internal crises.and never before have our young people had so much great opportunity to practice ourselves and, therefore, have a profound obligation to build a more perfect nation of our ancestor’s dream. and i think our government had provided us young people with the tools and condition to build the future of our dreams. even if we know some rules, some regulations, or e_periences from our books, we still simply cannot graft it onto today’s busier, more impersonal, complicated world. instead, our challenges is to arrive at a consensus values and common vision of what we can do today individually andcollectively to build a strong family and strong community, and above all, make the world a better place for us to live. thank you very much. contestant#18, in your speech, you talked about ecotourism. could you e_plain to us difference between ordinary tourists and e-tourists, or ecotourists?

answer: thank you for your question. and i think the key issue is the differences between our awareness. fot e_ample, if you want to go to a place to have a trip, enjoy your trip. and i think before you get on board, get on the bus, you can have the awareness that "i’m not a polluter, but an environment keeper." we’re not go to all those scenic spots to estroy all those beautiful scenes but we to appreciate the mother nature giving us so much things. thank you very much.

contestant #18,now that information technology is becoming more and more accessible to people in china, do you think books will become less and less important?

answer: well, i think, maybe, umm, i don’t think that all those echnologies can replace the importance of books. we’re in our modern village where so many new industries—it industries, tourism ndustries—crop up every day and this brave new world seem a little bit dehumanizing and inhospitable to a lot of people.the world can no longer be defined as a place on a map or list or people in organizations but i think the true value, the essence of our village remains the same.it is the network of values relationship that support our lives and we can learn those things from our books because books is the very first beginning stage of what we learn. thank you very much.

i’d like to ask you a question about your prepared speech, please. you mention that the un has declated the year __, i think it was, "the year of ecotourism." do you think that such gestures really serve a purpose? answer: and i think one of my teachers said to me, when i prepared my prepared speech, and he tells me that if we pay more attention to omething like environmental protection or ecotourism, it is more, it is better for us to bear in mind we should learn something in our hearts, we should have something about the awareness about how to pay more respect to our environment, not to talk about something orally but to bear something in our hearts. follow our hearts, our environment can be better.thank you very much.
