you know, i didn"t set out to be a parenting e_pert. in fact, i"m not very interested in parenting, per se. it"s just that there"s a certain style of parenting these days that is kind of messing up kids, impending their chances to develop into themselves.
there’s a certain style of parenting these days that’s getting in the way. i guess what i’m saying is, we spend a lot of time being very concerned about parents who aren’t involved enough in the lives of their kids and their education or their upbringing, and rightly so.
but at the other end of the spectrum, there’s a lot of harm going on there as well, where parents feel a kid can’t be successful unless the parent is protecting and preventing at every turn, and hovering over every happening, and micromanaging every moment, and steering their kid towards some small subset of colleges and careers.
but not just the grades, the scores, but the accolades and the awards and the sports, the activities, the leadership. we tell our kids, don’t just join a club, start a club, because colleges want to see that. and check the bo_ for community service. i mean, show the colleges you care about others.
and all of this is done to some hoped-for degree of perfection. we e_pect our kids to perform at a level of perfection. we were never asked to perform at ourselves, and so because so much is required, we think, well then, of course we parents have to argue with every teacher and principle and coach and referee and act like our kid’s concierge and personal handler and secretary.
and then with our kids, our precious kids, we spend so much time nudging, cajoling, hinting, helping, haggling, nagging as the case may be, to be sure they’re not screwing up, not closing doors, not ruining their future, some hoped-for admission to a tiny handful of colleges that deny almost every applicant.
and they see in our faces that our approval, that our love, that their very worth, comes from a’s. and then we walk alongside them and offer clucking praise like a trainer at the westminster dog show-coa_ing them to just jump a little higher and soar a little farther, day after day after day.
and when they get to high school, they don’t say, ‘ well, what might i be interested in studying or doing as an activity?’ they go to counselors and they say,’ what do i need to do to get into the right college?’
and then, when the grades start to roll in in high school, and they’re getting some b’s, or god forbid some c’s, they frantically te_t their friends and say, ‘has anyone ever gotten into the right college with these grades?’
and our kids, regardless of where they end up at the end of high school, they’re breathless. they’re a little burned out. they’re a little old before their time, wishing the grow-ups in their lives had said,’what you’ve done in enough, this effort you’ve put forth in childhood is enough.’
but if you llok at what we’ve done, if you have the courage to really look at it, you’ll see that not only do our kids think their worth comes from grades and scores, but that when we live right up inside their precious developing minds all the time, like our own version of the movie ‘being john malkovich,’ we send our children the message: ‘hey kid, i don’t think you can actually achieve any of this without me.’
so simply put, if our children are to develop self-efficacy, and they must, then they hav to do a whole lot more of the thinking, planning, deciding, doing, hoping, coping, trial and error, dreaming, and e_periencing of life for themselves。
now, am i saying every kid is hard-working and motivated and doesn’t need a parent’s involvement or interest in their lives, and we should just back off and let go? hell no. that is not what i’m saying. what i’m saying is, when we treat grades and scores and accolades and awards as the purpose of childhood, all in furtherance of some hoped-for admission to a tiny number of colleges or entrance to a small number of careers, that ’s too narrow a definition of success for our kids.
and even though we might help them achieve some short-term wins by overhelping like they get a better grade if we help them do their homework, they might end up with a longer childhood resume when we help-what i’m saying is that all of this comes at a long-term cost to their sense of self. what i’m saying is , we should be less concerned with the specific set of colleges they might be able to apply to or might get into and far more concerned that they have the habits, the mindset, the skill set, the wellness, to be successful wherever they go.
what i’m saying is, our kids need us to be a little less obsessed with grades and scores and a whole lot more interested in childhood providing a foundation for their success built on things like love and chores.
did i just say chores? did i just say chores? i really did. but really, here’s why. the longest longitudinal study of humans ever conducted is called the harvard grant study. it found that professional success in life, which is what we want for our kids, that professional success in life comes from having dong chores as a kid, and the earlier you started, the better, that a roll-up-your-sleeves.
and pitch in mindest, a mindset that says, there’s some unpleasant work, someone’s got to do it, it might as well be me, a mindset that says, i will contribute my effort to the betterment of the whole, that’s what gets you ahead in the workplace.
now, we all know this. you know this. we all know this, and yet, in the checklisted childhood, we absolve our kids of doing the work of chores around the house, and then they end up as young adults in the workplace still waiting for a checklist, but it doesn’t e_ist, and more importantly, lacking the impulse, the instinct to roll up their sleeves, and pitch in and look around and wonder, how can i be useful to my colleagues?how can i anticipate a few steps ahead to what my boss might need?
a second very important finding from the harvard grand study said that happiness in life comes from love, not love of work, love of humans: our spouse, our partner, our friends, our family.
so childhood needs to teach our kids how to love, and the they can’t love others if they don’t first love themselves, and they won’t themselves if we can’t offer them unconditional love.
right. and so, instead of being obsessed with grades and scores, when our precious offspring come home from school, or we come home from work, we need to close our technology, put away our phones, and look them in the eye, and let them see the joy that fills our faces, when we see our child for the first time in a few hours.
and then we have to say,’ how was your day? what did you like about today?’ and when your teenage daughter says,’lunch,’ like mine did, and i want to hear about the math test, not lunch, you have to still take an interest in lunch. you gotta say, ‘what was great about lunch today?’
they need to know they matter to us as humans, not because of their gpa. all right, so you’re thinking, chores and love, that sounds all well and good, but give me a break. the colleges want to see top scores and grades and accolades and awards, and i’m going to tell you, sort of.
the very biggest brand-name schools are asking that of our young adults, but here’s the good news. contrary to what the college rankings racket would have us believe-you don’t have to go to one of the biggest brand name schools to be happy and successful in life.
happy and successful people went to state school, went to a small college no one has heard of, went to community college, went to a college over here and flunked out.
the evidence is in this room, is in our communities, that this is the truth. and if we could widen our blinders and be willing to look at a few more colleges, maybe remove our own egos from the equation, we could accept and embrace this truth and then realize, it is hardly the end of the world, if our kids don’t go to one of those big brand-name schools.
and more importantly, if their childhood has not been lived, according to tyrannical checklist then when they get to college, whichever one it is, well, they’ll have gone there on their own volition, fueled by their own desire, capable and ready to thrive there.
i have to admit something to you. i’ve got two kids i mentioned, sawyer and avery. they’re teenagers. and once upon a time, i think i was treating my sawyer and avery like little bonsai trees-that i was going to carefully clip and prune and shape into some perfect form of a human one of the most highly selective colleges.
but i’ve come to realize, after working with thousands of other people’s kids-and raising two kids of my own, my kids aren’t bonsai trees. they’re wildflowers of an unknown genus and species-and it’s my job to provide a nourishing environment, to strengthen them through chores and to love them so they can love others and receive love and the college, the major, the career, that’s up to them.
my job is not to make them become what i would have them become, but to support them in becoming their glorious selves.thank you!

8 secrets of success
演說(shuō)者:richard st. john
this is really a two-hour presentation i give to high school students, cut down to three minutes. and it all started one day on a plane, on my way to ted, seven years ago. and in the seat ne_t to me was a high school student, a teenager, and she came from a really poor family.
and she wanted to make something of her life, and she asked me a simple little question. she said, "what leads to success?"and i felt really badly, because i couldn"t give her a good answer.
so i get off the plane, and i come to ted. and i think, jeez, i"m in the middle of a room of successful people! so why don"t i ask them what helped them succeed, and pass it on to kids? so here we are, seven years, 500 interviews later, and i"m going to tell you what really leads to success and makes tedsters tick.
and the first thing is passion. freeman thomas says, "i"m driven by my passion." tedsters do it for love; they don"t do it for money.
carol coletta says, "i would pay someone to do what i do." and the interesting thing is: if you do it for love, the money comes anyway.
work! rupert murdoch said to me, "it"s all hard work. nothing comes easily. but i have a lot of fun." did he say fun? rupert? yes!
tedsters do have fun working. and they work hard. i figured, they"re not workaholics. they"re workafrolics.
good!ale_ garden says, "to be successful, put your nose down in something and get damn good at it."there"s no magic; it"s practice, practice, practice.
and it"s focus. norman jewison said to me, "i think it all has to do with focusing yourself on one thing."and push! david gallo says, "push yourself. physically, mentally, you"ve got to push, push, push."you"ve got to push through shyness and self-doubt.
goldie hawn says, "i always had self-doubts. i wasn"t good enough; i wasn"t smart enough. i didn"t think i"d make it."now it"s not always easy to push yourself, and that"s why they invented mothers
(applause) frank gehry said to me, "my mother pushed me."serve! sherwin nuland says, "it was a privilege to serve as a doctor."
a lot of kids want to be millionaires. the first thing i say is: "ok, well you can"t serve yourself; you"ve got to serve others something of value. because that"s the way people really get rich."
ideas! tedster bill gates says, "i had an idea: founding the first micro-computer software company."i"d say it was a pretty good idea. and there"s no magic to creativity in coming up with ideas — it"s just doing some very simple things. and i give lots of evidence.
persist! joe kraus says, "persistence is the number one reason for our success." you"ve got to persist through failure. you"ve got to persist through crap! which of course means "criticism, rejection, assholes and pressure."
so, the answer to this question is simple: pay 4,000 bucks and come to ted.or failing that, do the eight things — and trust me, these are the big eight things that lead to success.
thank you tedsters for all your interviews!(applause)

“once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. to all the suitors who came to the king"s palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each ne_t to impossible. one day, into the king"s palace came a handsome young prince..." well, you know the rest. the three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess"s hand triumphantly.
and the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "and they live happily every after."
why aren"t we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, i would say, so unimaginative? how can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? because, i think, it is a typical success story. it is highly philosophical and symbolic. by implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
the story not only caters to everyone"s inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. the reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. if a person inherits his father"s millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. the term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. but as i understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. to clarify my view, let me give another analogy.
if we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away david seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another david, namely david beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. if we further changed the rules by not allowing arsenal"s defenders to defend, so that beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. in accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. the sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
the concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. in acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. that"s why we greatly admire stephen hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.
i myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am. if i come out first, it will be a great success for me. if i come out last-i hope this will not be the case-but if i come out last, i will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. for me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because i have truly gained by participating.
let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. you my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. the ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.

today i am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. what is success? it is what everyone is longing for.sometimes success would be rather simple. winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the e_am is success; making a new friend is success; even now i am standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.
however, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomes very
complicated. is fortune success? is fame success? is high social status success? no, i don’t think so. i believe success is the realization of people’s hopes and ideals.nowadays, in the modern society there are many people who are regarded as the successful. and the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and lu_urious life. so most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. but the problem is wether it is real success. we all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. if we keep chasing them, where is the end? what will satisfy us at last? therefore, we can see, to get the real success we must need something inside, which is the realization of people’ hopes and ideals.
different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. but i am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. these are the best treasures. so now i am very proud that i have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. it is my success, cause i raise up to challenge my hope.
what is success? everyone has his own interpretation as i do. but i am sure every success leads to an ever-brighter future. so ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a successful life!
wish you all good success
have you ever thought why there are very few great people? i think there is probably only one great person out of 10,000 at best, and most probably much less than that. but why? most people want to be great, right? why are there only very few of them? here is the reason:
most people do not pay the price of greatness.
i think this one is quite obvious. now, the ne_t question is: why not? if there are so many people who want to be great, why only very few of them actually pay the price? the answer to these questions e_plains the difference between the almost 100% people who want to be great and the much less than 0.01% who actually be so.
the reason why very few people actually pay the price is this: the road to greatness is continuously painful for long time.
greatness requires sacrifices and there is no sacrifice without pain. the kind of sacrifices required for greatness is the ones that make the process continuously painful for long time. if you want to be good it will be painful only every now and then, and many people can still handle it. but being great is a totally different level. the pain is much deeper and it is continuous. very few people can endure this kind of pain and that’s why there are very few great people. most people naturally choose things that bring pleasures to them. it’s unnatural to choose pain over pleasure, let alone doing it continuously for long time.
but that’s what i believe is the secret to greatness: the secret to greatness is choosing pain over pleasures continuously for long time.

what success means to me?
once upon a time, an old rich woman left all her property to the person who could answer her question correctly. her question was this “what is the most important thing for a person who wants to succeed?” to my surprise, the answer was not money, not power, not even opportunity, but “ambition”.
why is ambition so important? a person without ambition is like a near-sighted lion. all the things in the distance appear blurred. no matter how strong it is, it can"t go far.
a lion lives to rule the whole plain. a person must prove that “i am a king here”, at least you are the king of yourself.
nowadays, the world is very competitive. even if you get to the top of your own field, there might be still someone better than you. so we have to ask ourselves: what is the proof of success? i believe it is doing something for this world.
remember: as a successful person, in addition to ambition, the other key you must hold is love. when you look back at history, you"ll find you were standing on the shoulders of the giants. you have enjoyed what they had left you. so we should live to work for the improvement of the world. from president to citizen, we should all take part in building a new www for which i have my own e_planation ----it is“of the world, by the world, for the world”. only as a member of the global village, can you feel you are really successful.

it is easy to describe success in terms of money, fame and reputation. but i believe that success is not e_ternal. i believe that success comes from within. my definition of success is to be true to yourself, and be true to others. that means, that you must cherish your personal ideal even in the face of adversity. i also believe that success is not discriminatory. success is not restricted to such a class of people, in fact, it may be achieved by any person irrespective of his race, creed, gender and economic background. a good e_ample of success is that of beethoven. he is one of the world"s most famous composers, yet he was deaf. he could not hear the majestic pieces of music that he created. yet, in the face of this adversity, he was able to maintain his ideals--that of composing music.
to e_emplify what success means to me, i pose a question to all of you. what brings us together here today? i believe that it is the beauty of the spoken word. the effect of pause and the sound of rhetoric are unique to the spoken word. i believe the beauty of the spoken word is even stronger for those who have difficulty in e_pressing themselves. these people are reclusive and had their emotions hidden within them. i once went to australia and i saw two pictures, once was drawn by a normal child, the other was drawn by a child with social inhibitions. the picture drawn by the normal child was simple and plain. the other was life-like, full of details and imagination. what this shows is that these are ideas, emotions and feelings that are locked internally in these
children.
my ideal is to be the key, spreading the beauty of the spoken words to these children. these children have been neglected, but i feel that i can and should help these children to find themselves and be able to e_press themselves.
i realize that this is a difficult task, and there are many obstacles on the way. but i believe in my ideals and i will stick to them--even in the face of adversity. we should never have a premature abortion of ideals--let the child, let our ideals, stand the challenge. for a life without ideals is not living.

at that day, i got quite ready and i had the confidence to be a good teacher. i arrived at the classroom, eager to share my knowledge and e_perience with all the students of my class. having prepared for two days, i had no doubt to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature.
“stand up!” the monitor spoke loudly. the entire class stood up as i entered the classroom. i was a little puzzled, but quickly that awkwardness was over, i regained my calmness and began my well-prepared lecture, sure to gain their respect--- or even their admiration. ‘i’m your english, miss jiang. today we are going to learn . . . ’ i was very pleased with work . as the bell rang, i went back to my office full of a sense of achievement. the following day when i read my students’ diaries, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. the first diary said, “our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today. perhaps her ne_t lecture would be better.” greatly surprised, i read diary after diary, each e_pressed a similar theme. “didn’t i teach them anything? i described the entire framework and laid the background for the passage we would study in class,” i puzzled. “how should they say i taught them nothing?”
it was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas about education weren’t the same as those of my students. i thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. my students thought a teacher’s job was to provide e_act information as directly and clearly as possible. what a difference! i tell myself i can handle it.’ compared to what others have been through , i’m fortunate. thinking of these sentences i felt something important struck me. i believe my life would not be that bad and it was proved to be true. later during my life and work i always told myself ‘i can handle it.’ when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming. and every time i said it, i always came back to my senses.
now the e_perience with my students has made me learn a lot, and made me be a better english teacher.
the following year, it was september 10th. i went to class as well. when i stepped into the class, i felt surprised. there was a post card on the table, but i didn’t show it on my face. i began teaching lessons. after the class, i walked out of the class with a card in my hand. i opened the card in the office, it was a music card with words on it. it said ‘many thanks to you, miss jiang. we all love you we like your teaching.’ i was impressed by the words. how honest and simple the words were. hot tears couldn’t help dropping. at that time, i was so proud of being an english teacher.
so here, coming to us are words that can give us strength. whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

belief in yourself is the secret of success
from the moment we are born, our destiny had been set. it is the start of our life. as a little child, we go to school and are curious to everything in the world.
when we get older, we tend to understand the function in this world.
we start to think, sometimes wonder about life. ne_t thing we know, we are growing up. the world is changing, and our life is changing everyday.
right now, this particular moment in our life, we think again.
we have we done in our life?
are we successful?
are we rich?
are we happy? and flashbacks starts, the memories took charge of our brain.
we reflect to ourselves, we question ourselves.
why are we not successful?
why are we not rich?
why are we not happy?
then, we need to ask how.
how to be successful?
how to be rich?
how to be happy?
with the questions, we figure out the answers. one of the dominating techqniue to be successful is first start from yourself. believe in yourself. if you don"t believe in what you can do, then who else?
if you don"t care about yourself, then who else? trust your feelings, believe that you can do it. and as long as you hold that thought, nothing, nothing can stop you.
the successful future right ahead of you are led by a pathway called belief.

success is everyone wants, whether it was or the cause of education. give people the joy of success.
how can we succeed? the great inventor thomas edison said, genius is 99 percent on 1 percent of the hard work and inspiration. success must be hard work. if you sleep, is unlikely to succeed.
edison invented the light bulb durable, he has done many thousands of e_periments, but still no way to enable the ability to live in high-temperature filament. ne_t to it was said: "bah! can not find even a. you have made so many e_periments, and can not find, do not white and effort, and doing anything else now!" he said: "i must ability to find a live high-temperature materials, he must find out. "work pays off, he finally invented a durable light bulb, so that the well-being of people around the world to be known as the 20th century, one of the greatest inventions.
we need to learn the spirit of his, if he was not unremitting efforts, it is impossible to invent the light bulb durability, we can see the need for the conditions of success, as long as required to meet the conditions for success, success easy.
seize the opportunity is one of the conditions for success. for e_ample it! bill gates, the world"s richest university, a keen awareness of the emerging computer industry in this huge business opportunities, he dropped out from harvard university, and with their friends opened a computer company called microsoft, when his friends friends are opposed to what he has done, but bill gates said, time will prove that i am right to do so. now, computers in all walks of life in a wide range of applications, to the people"s work and life have brought tremendous changes, microsoft has become the world"s largest software one.
there are a lot of success, for e_ample, scientific and cultural qualities of their own. without a good basic knowledge, even though hard work and a heaven-sent opportunity to succeed or not. there are left to help others, it is necessary to embark on the path of success and is e_ceptionally difficult.
to be successful, needs to be done and opportunities.

"once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. to all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each ne_t to impossible. one day, into the king's palace came a handsome young prince…' well, you know the rest. the three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess's hand triumphantly.
and the ending is always the same, finishing with the line 'and they live happily every after.'
why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, i would say, so unimaginative? how can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? because, i think, it is a typical success story. it is highly philosophical and symbolic. by implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
the story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. the reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. if a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. the term 'success', to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. but as i understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. to clarify my view, let me give another analogy.
if we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away david seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another david, namely david beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. if we further changed the rules by not allowing arsenal's defenders to defend, so that beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. in accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. the sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.
the concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature of difficulty is also relative. something you do effortlessly might pose a great difficulty for a handicapped person. in acquiring the ability to do the same as you can, he or she achieve success. that's why we greatly admire stephen hawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatly to the field of science.
i myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stage fright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest like this. i could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering the university level contest.but i chose to accept the challenge and to face the difficulties. now here i am. if i come out first, it will be a great success for me. if i come out last-i hope this will not be the case-but if i come out last, i will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a true success, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do more assertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. for me, it is a meaningful step forward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in my life, because i have truly gained by participating.
let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition of success. you my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, position and fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized the process of overcoming difficulties. the ancient wisdom had already defined the meaning of success, and this is my definition, too.
thank you.

i"m really e_cited to share with you some findings that really surprise me about what makes companies succeed the most, what factors actually matter the most for startup success.i believe that the startup organization is one of the greatest forms to make the world a better place.
if you take a group of people with the right equity incentives and organize them in a startup, you can unlock human potential in a way never before possible. you get them to achieve unbelievable things.but if the startup organization is so great, why do so many fail? that"s what i wanted to find out.
i wanted to find out what actually matters most for startup success.and i wanted to try to be systematic about it, avoid some of my instincts and maybe misperceptions i have from so many companies i"ve seen over the years.i wanted to know this because i"ve been starting businesses since i was 12 years old when i sold candy at the bus stop in junior high school。
to high school, when i made solar energy devices, to college, when i made loudspeakers. and when i graduated from college, i started software companies. and 20 years ago, i started idealab, and in the last 20 years, we started more than 100 companies, many successes, and many big failures. we learned a lot from those failures.so i tried to look across what factors accounted the most for company success and failure.
so i looked at these five. first, the idea. i used to think that the idea was everything. i named my company idealab for how much i worship the "aha!" moment when you first come up with the idea. but then over time, i came to think that maybe the team, the e_ecution, adaptability, that mattered even more than the idea.
i never thought i"d be quoting bo_er mike tyson on the ted stage, but he once said, "everybody has a plan, until they get punched in the face." (laughter) and i think that"s so true about business as well. so much about a team"s e_ecution is its ability to adapt to getting punched in the face by the customer. the customer is the true reality. and that"s why i came to think that the team maybe was the most important thing.
then i started looking at the business model. does the company have a very clear path generating customer revenues? that started rising to the top in my thinking about maybe what mattered most for success.then i looked at the funding. sometimes companies received intense amounts of funding. maybe that"s the most important thing?
and then of course, the timing. is the idea way too early and the world"s not ready for it? is it early, as in, you"re in advance and you have to educate the world? is it just right? or is it too late, and there"s already too many competitors? so i tried to look very carefully at these five factors across many companies. and i looked across all 100 idealab companies, and 100 non-idealab companies to try and come up with something scientific about it.
so first, on these idealab companies, the top five companies -- citysearch, carsdirect, goto, netzero, tickets.com -- those all became billion-dollar successes. and the five companies on the bottom -- z.com, insider pages, mylife, desktop factory, peoplelink -- we all had high hopes for, but didn"t succeed.so i tried to rank across all of those attributes how i felt those companies scored on each of those dimensions. and then for non-idealab companies, i looked at wild successes, like airbnb and instagram and uber and youtube and linkedin.
and some failures: webvan, kozmo, pets.com flooz and friendster. the bottom companies had intense funding, they even had business models in some cases, but they didn"t succeed. i tried to look at what factors actually accounted the most for success and failure across all of these companies, and the results really surprised me.the number one thing was timing.
timing accounted for 42 percent of the difference between success and failure. team and e_ecution came in second, and the idea, the differentiability of the idea, the uniqueness of the idea, that actually came in third.now, this isn"t absolutely definitive, it"s not to say that the idea isn"t important, but it very much surprised me that the idea wasn"t the most important thing. sometimes it mattered more when it was actually timed.the last two, business model and funding, made sense to me actually.
i think business model makes sense to be that low because you can start out without a business model and add one later if your customers are demanding what you"re creating. and funding, i think as well, if you"re underfunded at first but you"re gaining traction, especially in today"s age, it"s very, very easy to get intense funding.
so now let me give you some specific e_amples about each of these. so take a wild success like airbnb that everybody knows about. well, that company was famously passed on by many smart investors because people thought, "no one"s going to rent out a space in their home to a stranger." of course, people proved that wrong. but one of the reasons it succeeded, aside from a good business model, a good idea, great e_ecution, is the timing.that company came out right during the height of the recession when people really needed e_tra money, and that maybe helped people overcome their objection to renting out their own home to a stranger.same thing with uber.
uber came out, incredible company, incredible business model, great e_ecution, too. but the timing was so perfect for their need to get drivers into the system. drivers were looking for e_tra money; it was very, very important.some of our early successes, citysearch, came out when people needed web pages. goto.com, which we announced actually at ted in 1998, was when companies were looking for cost-effective ways to get traffic.
we thought the idea was so great, but actually, the timing was probably maybe more important. and then some of our failures. we started a company called z.com, it was an online entertainment company. we were so e_cited about it -- we raised enough money, we had a great business model, we even signed incredibly great hollywood talent to join the company. but broadband penetration was too low in 1999-20__. it was too hard to watch video content online, you had to put codecs in your browser and do all this stuff, and the company eventually went out of business in 20__.
just two years later, when the codec problem was solved by adobe flash and when broadband penetration crossed 50 percent in america, youtube was perfectly timed. great idea, but unbelievable timing. in fact, youtube didn"t even have a business model when it first started. it wasn"t even certain that that would work out. but that was beautifully, beautifully timed.
so what i would say, in summary, is e_ecution definitely matters a lot. the idea matters a lot. but timing might matter even more. and the best way to really assess timing is to really look at whether consumers are really ready for what you have to offer them. and to be really, really honest about it, not be in denial about any results that you see, because if you have something you love, you want to push it forward, but you have to be very, very honest about that factor on timing.
as i said earlier, i think startups can change the world and make the world a better place. i hope some of these insights can maybe help you have a slightly higher success ratio, and thus make something great come to the world that wouldn"t have happened otherwise.thank you very much, you"ve been a great audience.

e_perience makes you succeed
i still remembered the first time when i became a technical secondary school teacher of english literature. it seemed that it happened yesterday.
at that day, i got quite ready and i had the confidence to be a good teacher. i arrived at the classroom, eager to share my knowledge and e_perience with all the students of my class. having prepared for two days, i had no doubt to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature.

the following day when i read my students’ diaries, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. the first diary said, "our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today. perhaps her ne_t lecture would be better." greatly surprised, i read diary after diary, each e_pressed a similar theme. "didn’t i teach them anything? i described the entire framework and laid the background for the passage we would study in class," i puzzled. "how should they say i taught them nothing?"
it was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas about education weren’t the same as those of my students. i thought a teacher’s job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. my students thought a teacher’s job was to provide e_act information as directly and clearly as possible. what a difference!
i tell myself i can handle it.’ compared to what others have been through , i’m fortunate. thinking of these sentences i felt something important struck me. i believe my life would not be that bad and it was proved to be true. later during my life and work i always told myself ‘i can handle it.’ when my own goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming. and every time i said it, i always came back to my senses.
now the e_perience with my students has made me learn a lot, and made me be a better english teacher.
the following year, it was september 10th. i went to class as well. when i stepped into the class, i felt surprised. there was a post card on the table, but i didn’t show it on my face. i began teaching lessons. after the class, i walked out of the class with a card in my hand. i opened the card in the office, it was a music card with words on it. it said ‘many thanks to you, miss jiang. we all love you we like your teaching.’ i was impressed by the words. how honest and simple the words were. hot tears couldn’t help dropping. at that time, i was so proud of being an english teacher.
so here, coming to us are words that can give us strength. whatever you’re going through, tell yourself you can handle it. tell this to yourself over and over, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little more fortitude.

perhaps the sky is still blue, but i can see the black sky. perhaps the flowers are still beautiful, but i can see the ugly flowers. perhaps the sun still shines, but there’s no sun in my world. perhaps the world doesn’t change, but my world is changing. the e_am has been over, but i can’t wake up because i think i did very badly.
but i know, even if you didn’t do well this time, but you can do well ne_t time. time can’t run backwards, you can try your best to do something well in the future.

failure is what often happens.it is everywhere in your life.students may fail in e_ams, science may fail in their researchwork, and athletes may fail in competitions.
although failure happens to everyone, attitudes towards failure are various. some people don't think their failure is a very important thing at all. so they pay no attention to it. as a result, they will have the same failure a previously later.they spend their thime and energy on useless things and they may really be fools as they have thought.
success is not easy to talk about because the word success it-self has hundreds of definitions. for some it means power, for some it means wealth, for others it is fame or great achieve-ments. but i have my own understanding of it.
success means to try your best.
many people believe that success means to win. in my opin-ion, it means to try your best when you do everything, no matter you will win or not. when you are taking part in a long-distance race, if you keep on running as fast as you can, you are successful, although you may be the last to pass the finishing-line. because you have showed your best to others, and you have made i your greatest effort to be the winner.
success means to work hard.
no one can succeed without any hard work. karl ma_ was successful, because he spent more than 30 years writing the book 'communist manifesto'; tomas edison succeeded, because he had e_perimented thousands of times to find the best material for lights. every success calls for hard work. if you want to suc-ceed, work hard first.
other people are quite different from the two kinds of people mentiond above. instend of being distressed and lost, they draw a lesson from every failure and become more e_perienced. after hard work, they will be successful in the end. it is said that failure is the mother of success. success will be gained after times of failures so long as we are good at drawong lesson from our failures.
in my opinion , failure is not a bad thing , the really bad thing is taking a failure as failure or even lose our heart after failure.
more importantly, today, the world is undergoing fast rhythm of changing, some issues occur in one way this time and reoccur in another way that time.such instability and inconstancy make many long-time-lasting conventions and traditions not valid any longer. people encounter pile of new conditions everyday in current society, it is hard to find adequate reference from the wisdom of conventions for all of these new thing, what can really lead people to success is rational mind and creative ways of thinking. to meet the requirement of new missions, only creative activities could give out adaptive strategies. without creative thinking ways, there would no such increasingly development of science and technology in the past two centuries, no new type america-style democracy in the world, no so many products making modern life so comfortable and convenient. creative practices and original idea are the engine of the fast development of modern life, and are most essential for people to accomplish successful achievement in all kinds of fields.

10 tips for successful public speaking
feeling some nervousness before giving a speech is natural and healthy. it shows you care about doing well. but, too much nervousness can be detrimental. here"s how you can control your nervousness and make effective, memorable presentations:
1. know the room. be familiar with the place in which you will speak. arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and any visual aids.
2. know the audience. greet some of the audience as they arrive. it"s easier to speak to a group of friends than to a group of strangers.
3. know your material. if you"re not familiar with your material or are uncomfortable with it, your nervousness will increase. practice your speech and revise it if necessary.
4. rela_. ease tension by doing e_ercises.
5. visualize yourself giving your speech. imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear, and assured. when you visualize yourself as successful, you will be successful.
6. realize that people want you to succeed. audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative, and entertaining. they don"t want you to fail.
7. don"t apologize. if you mention your nervousness or apologize for any problems you think you have with your speech, you may be calling the audience"s attention to something they hadn"t noticed. keep silent.
8. concentrate on the message -- not the medium. focus your attention away from your own an_ieties, and outwardly toward your message and your audience. your nervousness will dissipate.
9. turn nervousness into positive energy. harness your nervous energy and transform it into vitality and enthusiasm.
10. gain e_perience. e_perience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking. a toastmasters club can provide the e_perience you need.

this is really a two-hour presentation i give to high school students, cut down to three minutes. and it all started one day on a plane, on my way to ted, seven years ago. and in the seat ne_t to me was a high school student, a teenager, and she came from a really poor family.
and she wanted to make something of her life, and she asked me a simple little question. she said, "what leads to success?" and i felt really badly, because i couldn"t give her a good answer. so i get off the plane, and i come to ted. and i think, jeez, i"m in the middle of a room of successful people! so why don"t i ask them what helped them succeed, and pass it on to kids? so here we are, seven years, 500 interviews later, and i"m gonna tell you what really leads to success and makes ted-sters tick.
and the first thing is passion.
freeman thomas says, "i"m driven by my passion." ted-sters do it for love; they don"t do it for money. carol coletta says, "i would pay someone to do what i do." and the interesting thing is: if you do it for love, the money comes anyway.
work!
rupert murdoch said to me, "it"s all hard work. nothing comes easily. but i have a lot of fun." did he say fun? rupert? yes! ted-sters do have fun working. and they work hard. i figured, they"re notworkaholics. they"re workafrolics.
good!
精通
ale_ garden says, "to be successful put your nose down in something and get damn good at it." there"s no magic; it"s practice, practice, practice.
and it"s focus.
norman jewison said to me, "i think it all has to do with focusing yourself on one thing."
and push!
強(qiáng)迫
david gallo says, "push yourself. physically, mentally, you"ve gotta push, push, push." you gotta push through shyness and self-doubt. goldie hawn says, "i always had self-doubts. i wasn"t good enough; i wasn"t smart enough. i didn"t think i"d make it." now it"s not always easy to push yourself, and that"s why they invented mothers. (laughter) frank gehry — frank gehry said to me, "my mother pushed me."
serve!
服務(wù)
sherwin nuland says, "it was a privilege to serve as a doctor." now a lot of kids tell me they want to be millionaires. and the first thing i say to them is: "ok, well you can"t serve yourself; you gotta serve others something of value. because that"s the way people really get rich."
ideas!
點(diǎn)子
ted-ster bill gates says, "i had an idea: founding the first micro-computer software company." i"d say it was a pretty good idea. and there"s no magic to creativity in coming up with ideas — it"s just doing some very simple things. and i give lots of evidence.
persist!
堅(jiān)持
joe kraus says, "persistence is the number one reason for our success." you gotta persist through failure. you gotta persist through crap! which of course means "criticism, rejection, assholes and pressure." (laughter) so, the big — the answer to this question is simple: pay 4,000 bucks and come to ted. or failing that, do the eight things — and trust me, these are the big eight things that lead to success. thank you ted-sters for all your interviews!

i"d like to take you back about seven years in my life. friday afternoon, a few days before christmas 20__. i was the director of operations at a consumer products company in san francisco, and i was called into a meeting that was already in progress. that meeting turned out to be my e_it interview. i was fired, along with several others.
i was 64 years old at the time. it wasn"t completely une_pected. i signed a stack of papers, gathered my personal effects, and left to join my wife who was waiting for me at a nearby restaurant, completely unaware. fast-forward several hours, we both got really silly drunk.
so, 40 plus years of continuous employment for a variety of companies, large and small, was over. i had a good a network, a good reputation -- i thought i"d be just fine. i was an engineer in manufacturing and packaging. i had a good background. retirement was, like for so many people, simply not an option for me.so i turned to consulting for the ne_t couple of years without any passion whatsoever.
and then an idea began to take root, born from my concern for our environment. i wanted to build my own business, designing and manufacturing biodegradable packaging from waste -- paper, agricultural, even te_tile waste -- replacing the to_ic, disposable plastic packaging to which we"ve all become addicted.
this is called clean technology, and it felt really meaningful to me. a venture that could help to reduce the billions of pounds of single-use plastic packaging dumped each year and polluting our land, our rivers and our oceans, and left for future generations to resolve -- our grandchildren, my grandchildren.
and so now at the age of 66, with 40 years of e_perience, i became an entrepreneur for the very first time.thank you. but there"s more.
lots of issues to deal with: manufacturing, outsourcing, job creation, patents, partnerships, funding -- these are all typical issues for a start-up, but hardly typical for me. and a word about funding. i live and work in san francisco. and if you"re looking for funding, you are typically going to compete with some very young peoplefrom the high-tech industry, and it can be very discouraging and intimidating. i have shoes older than most of these people.
i do.
but five years later, i"m thrilled and proud to share with you that our revenues have doubled every year, we have no debt, we have several marquee clients, our patent was issued, i have a wonderful partner who"s been with me right from the beginning, and we"ve won more than 20 awards for the work that we"ve done.but best of all, we"ve made a small dent -- a very small dent -- in the worldwide plastic pollution crisis.
and i am doing the most rewarding and meaningful work of my life right now. i can tell you there"s lots of resources available to entrepreneurs of all ages, but what i really yearned for five years ago was to find other first-time entrepreneurs who were my age. i wanted to connect with them. i had no role models, absolutely none. that 20-something app developer from silicon valley was not my role model.
i"m sure he was very clever --i want to do something about that, and i want all of us to do something about that. i want us to start talking more about people who don"t become entrepreneurs until they are seniors. talking about these bold men and women who are checking in when their peers, in essence, are checking out. and then connecting all these people across industries, across regions, across countries -- building a community.
you know, the small business administration tells us that 64 percent of new jobs created in the private sector in the usa are thanks to small businesses like mine. and who"s to say that we"ll stay forever small?we have an interesting culture that really e_pects when you reach a certain age, you"re going to be golfing, or playing checkers, or babysitting the grandkids all of the time.
and i adore my grandchildren --and i"m also passionate about doing something meaningful in the global marketplace.
and i"m going to have lots of company. the census bureau says that by 2050, there will be 84 million seniors in this country. that"s an amazing number. that"s almost twice as many as we have today. can you imagine how many first-time entrepreneurs there will be among 84 million people? and they"ll all have four decades of e_perience.
so when i say, "let"s start talking more about these wonderful entrepreneurs," i mean, let"s talk about their ventures, just as we do the ventures of their much younger counterparts. the older entrepreneurs in this country have a 70 percent success rate starting new ventures. 70 percent success rate. we"re like the golden state warriors of entrepreneurs --
and that number plummets to 28 percent for younger entrepreneurs. this is according to a uk-based group called cmi.
aren"t the accomplishments of a 70-year-old entrepreneur every bit as meaningful, every bit as newsworthy,as the accomplishments of a 30-year-old entrepreneur? of course they are. that"s why i"d like to make the phrase "70 over 70" just as --just as commonplace as the phrase "30 under 30."
thank you.

“once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as a blooming rose. to all the suitors who came to the king"s palace to ask for the hand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, each ne_t to impossible. one day, into the king"s palace came a handsome young prince..." well, you know the rest. the three tasks may be different in different versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the prince claiming the princess"s hand triumphantly.
and the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "and they live happily every after."
why aren"t we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, i would say, so unimaginative? how can a story like that endure generations of repetition`? because, i think, it is a typical success story. it is highly philosophical and symbolic. by implication, we see a 4-step definition of success: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 ) challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process of surmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through; and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.
the story not only caters to everyone"s inward yearning for success, but also emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. the reward of success will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. if a person inherits his father"s millions and leads an easy life, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are no difficulties involved in his achieving affluence. the term "success", to be sure. will not sit still for easy definition. but as i understand it, the true meaning of success entails a combination of both the process and the satisfactory result of an endeavor. to clarify my view, let me give another analogy.
if we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sent away david seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another david, namely david beckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill of accomplishment and the joy that it brings. if we further changed the rules by not allowing arsenal"s defenders to defend, so that beckham needed only to lift a finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, because the meaning of winning would have disappeared. in accepting the challenge, in surmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires its value. the sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree of difficulties on overcomes.

for me they normally happen, these career crises, often, actually, on a sunday evening, just as the sun is starting to set,
and the gap between my hopes for myself and the reality of my life starts to diverge so painfully that i normally end up weeping into a pillow.
i"m mentioning all this -- i"m mentioning all this because i think this is not merely a personal problem; you may think i"m wrong in this, but i think we live in an age when our lives are regularly punctuated by career crises,
by moments when what we thought we knew -- about our lives, about our careers -- comes into contact with a threatening sort of reality.
it"s perhaps easier now than ever before to make a good living. it"s perhaps harder than ever before to stay calm, to be free of career an_iety. i want to look now, if i may, at some of the reasons why we might be feeling an_iety about our careers.
why we might be victims of these career crises, as we"re weeping softly into our pillows. one of the reasons why we might be suffering is that we are surrounded by snobs.
in a way, i"ve got some bad news, particularly to anybody who"s come to o_ford from abroad. there"s a real problem with snobbery, because sometimes people from outside the u.k. imagine that snobbery is a distinctively u.k. phenomenon, fi_ated on country houses and titles.
the bad news is that"s not true. snobbery is a global phenomenon; we area global organization, this is a global phenomenon. what is a snob? a snob is anybody who takes a small part of you, and uses that to come to a complete vision of who you are. that is snobbery.
the dominant kind of snobbery that e_ists nowadays is job snobbery. you encounter it within minutes at a party, when you get asked that famous iconic question of the early 21st century, "what do you do?"
according to how you answer that question, people are either incredibly delighted to see you, or look at their watch and make their e_cuses.
now, the opposite of a snob is your mother.not necessarily your mother, or indeed mine, but, as it were, the ideal mother, somebody who doesn"t care about your achievements.
unfortunately, most people are not our mothers. most people make a strict correlation between how much time, and if you like, love -- not romantic love, though that may be something -- but love in general, respect --they are willing to accord us, that will be strictly defined by our position in the social hierarchy.
and that"s a lot of the reason why we care so much about our careers and indeed start caring so much about material goods. you know, we"re often told that we live in very materialistic times, that we"re all greedy people. i don"t think we are particularly materialistic.
i think we live in a society which has simply pegged certain emotional rewards to the acquisition of material goods. it"s not the material goods we want;
it"s the rewards we want. it"s a new way of looking at lu_ury goods. the ne_t time you see somebody driving a ferrari, don"t think, "this is somebody who"s greedy."
think, "this is somebody who is incredibly vulnerable and in need of love." feel sympathy, rather than contempt.
there are other reasons --there are other reasons why it"s perhaps harder now to feel calm than ever before. one of these, and it"s parado_ical, because it"s linked to something that"s rather nice, is the hope we all have for our careers.
never before have e_pectations been so high about what human beings can achieve with their life span.we"re told, from many sources, that any onecan achieve anything.
we"ve done away with the caste system, we are now in a system where anyone can rise to any position they please. and it"s a beautiful idea. along with that is a kind of spirit of equality;
we"re all basically equal. there are no strictly defined hierarchies. there is one really big problem with this, and that problem is envy.
envy, it"s a real taboo to mention envy, but if there"s one dominant emotion in modern society, that is envy. and it"s linked to the spirit of equality.
let me e_plain. i think it would be very unusual for anyone here, or anyone watching, to be envious of the queen of england. even though she is much richer than any of you are, and she"s got a very large house, the reason why we don"t envy her is because she"s too weird.
she"s simply too strange. we can"t relate to her, she speaks in a funny way, she comes from an odd place. so we can"t relate to her, and when you can"t relate to somebody, you don"t envy them.
the closer two people are -- in age, in background, in the process of identification -- the more there"s a danger of envy, which is incidentally why none of you should ever go to a school reunion, because there is no stronger reference point than people one was at school with.
the problem of modern society is it turns the whole world into a school. everybody"s wearing jeans, everybody"s the same. and yet, they"re not. so there"s a spirit of equality combined with deep inequality, which can make for a very stressful situation.
it"s probably as unlikely that you would nowadays become as rich and famous as bill gates, as it was unlikely in the17th century that you would accede to the ranks of the french aristocracy.
but the point is, it doesn"t feel that way. it"s made to feel, by magazines and other media outlets, that if you"ve got energy, a few bright ideas about technology, a garage -- you, too, could start a major thing.
the consequences of this problem make themselves felt in bookshops. when you go to a large bookshop and look at the self-help sections, as i sometimes do -- if you analyze self-help book sproduced in the world today, there are basically two kinds.
the first kind tells you, "you can do it! you can make it! anything"s possible!" the other kind tells you how to cope with what we politely call "low self-esteem," or impolitely call, "feeling very bad about yourself."
there"s a real correlation between a society that tells people that they can do anything, and the e_istence of low self-esteem. so that"s another way in which something quite positive can have a nasty kickback.
there is another reason why we might be feeling more an_ious --about our careers, about our status in the world today, than ever before. and it"s, again, linked to something nice. and that nice thing is called meritocracy.
everybody, all politicians on left and right, agree that meritocracy is a great thing, and we should all be trying to make our societies really, really meritocratic. in other words -- what is a meritocratic society?
a meritocratic society is one in which, if you"ve got talent and energy and skill, you will get to the top, nothing should hold you back. it"s a beautiful idea.
the problem is, if you really believe in a society where those who merit to get to the top, get to the top, you"ll also, by implication, and in a far more nasty way, believe in a society where those who deserve to get to the bottom also get to the bottom and stay there.
i nother words, your position in life comes to seem not accidental, but merited and deserved. and that makes failure seem much more crushing.
you know, in the middle ages, in england, when you met a very poor person, that person would be described as an "unfortunate" -- literally, somebody who had not been blessed by fortune, an unfortunate.
nowadays, particularly in the united states, if you meet someone at the bottom of society, they may unkindly be described as a "loser." there"s a real difference between an unfortunate and a loser,
and that shows 400 years of evolution in society and our belief in who is responsible for our lives. it"s no longer the gods, it"s us. we"re in the driving seat.
that"s e_hilarating if you"re doing well, and very crushing if you"re not. it leads, in the worst cases -- in the analysis of a sociologist like emil durkheim -- it leads to increased rates of suicide.
there are more suicides in developed, individualistic countries than in any other part of the world. and some of the reason for that is that people take what happens to them e_tremely personally -- they own their success, but they also own their failure.
is there any relief from some of thesepressures that i"ve been outlining? i think there is. i just want to turn to afew of them. let"s take meritocracy. this idea that everybody deserves to getwhere they get to, i think it"s a crazy idea, completely crazy.
i will support any politician of left and right, with any halfway-decent meritocratic idea; i am a meritocrat in that sense. but i think it"s insane to believe that we will ever make a society that is genuinely meritocratic; it"s an impossible dream.
the idea that we will make a society where literally everybody is graded, the good at the top, bad at the bottom, e_actly done as it should be, is impossible. there are simply too many random factors:
accidents, accidents of birth, accidents of things dropping on people"s heads, illnesses, etc. we will never get to grade them, never get to grade people as they should.
i"m drawn to a lovely quote by st. augustine in "the city of god," where he says, "it"s a sin to judge any man by his post." in modern english that would mean it"s a sinto come to any view of who you should talk to, dependent on their business card. it"s not the post that should count.
according to st. augustine, only god can really put everybody in their place; he"s going to do that on the day of judgment, with angels and trumpets, and the skies will open. insane idea, if you"re a secularist person, like me.
but something very valuable in that idea, nevertheless.in other words, hold your horses when you"re coming to judge people. you don"t necessarily know what someone"s truevalue is.
that is an unknown part of them, and we shouldn"t behave as though it is known. there is another source of solace and comfort for all this. when we think about failing in life, when we think about failure, one of the reasons why we fear failing is not just a loss of income, a loss of status.
what we fear is the judgment and ridicule of others. and it e_ists.the number one organ of ridicule, nowadays, is the newspaper. if you open the newspaper any day of the week,
it"s full of people who"ve messed up their lives. they"ve slept with the wrong person, taken the wrong substance, passed the wrong piece of legislation -- whatever it is, and then are fit for ridicule. in other words, they have failed.
and they are described as "losers." now, is there any alternative to this? i think the western tradition shows us one glorious alternative, which is tragedy.
tragic art, as it developed in the theaters of ancient greece, in the fifth century b.c., was essentially an art form devoted to tracing how people fail, and also according them a level of sympathy, which ordinary life would not necessarily accord them.
a few years ago, i was thinking about this, and i went to "the sunday sport," a tabloid newspaper i don"t recommend you start reading if you"re not familiar with it already.
and i went to talk to them about certain of the great tragedies of western art. i wanted to see how they would seize the bare bones of certain stories, if they came in as a news item at the news desk on a saturday afternoon.
i mentioned othello; they"d not heard of it but were fascinated.i asked them to write a headline for the story. they came up with "love-crazed immigrant kills senator"s daughter." splashed across the headline.
i gave them the plotline of madame bovary. again, a book they were enchanted to discover. and they wrote "shopaholic adulteress swallows arsenic after credit fraud."
and then my favorite -- they really do have a kind of genius of their own, these guys -- my favorite is sophocles" oedipus the king: "se_ with mum was blinding."
in a way, if you like, at one end of the spectrum of sympathy, you"ve got the tabloid newspaper. at the other end of the spectrum, you"ve got tragedy and tragic art.
and i suppose i"m arguing that we should learn a little bit about what"s happening in tragic art. it would be insane to call hamlet a loser. he is not a loser, though he has lost.
and i think that is the message of tragedy to us, and why it"s so very, very important, i think.
the other thing about modern society and why it causes this an_iety, is that we have nothing at its center that is non-human. we are the first society to be living in a world where we don"t worship anything other than ourselves.
we think very highly of ourselves, and so we should; we"ve put people on the moon, done all sorts of e_traordinary things. and so we tend to worship ourselves.
our heroes are human heroes. that"s a very new situation. most other societies have had, right at their center, the worship of something transcendent: a god, a spirit, a natural force, the universe, whatever it is --
something else that is being worshiped. we"ve slightly lost the habit of doing that, which is, i think, why we"re particularly drawn to nature.
not for the sake of our health, though it"s often presented that way, but because it"s an escape from the human anthill. it"s an escape from our own competition, and our own dramas.
and that"s why ween joy looking at glaciers and oceans, and contemplating the earth from outside its perimeters, etc. we like to feel in contact with something that is non-human, and that is so deeply important to us.
what i think i"ve been talking about really is success and failure. and one of the interesting things about success is that we think we know what it means. if i said that there"s somebody behind the screen who"s very successful, certain ideas would immediately come to mind.
you"d think that person might have made a lot of money, achieved renown in some field. my own theory of success -- i"m somebody who"s very interested in success, i really want to be successful, always thinking, how can i be more successful?
but as i get older, i"m also very nuanced about what that word "success" might mean.here"s an insight that i"ve had about success: you can"t be successful at everything.
we hear a lot of talk about work-life balance. nonsense. you can"t have it all. you can"t. so any vision of success has to admit what it"s losing out on, where the element of loss is.
and i think any wise life will accept, as i say, that there is going to be an element where we"re not succeeding.
and the thing about a successful life is that a lot of the time, our ideas of what it would mean to live successfully are not our own. they"re sucked in from other people; chiefly, if you"re a man, your father,
and if you"re a woman, your mother. psychoanalysis has been drumming home this message for about 80 years. no one"s quite listening hard enough, but i very much believe it"s true.
and we also suck in messages from everything from the television, to advertising, to marketing, etc. these are hugely powerful forces that define what we want and how we view ourselves.
when we"re told that banking is a very respectable profession, a lot of us want to go into banking. when banking is no longer so respectable, we lose interest in banking. we are highly open to suggestion.
so what i want to argue for is not that we should give up on our ideas of success, but we should make sure that they are our own. we should focus in on our ideas, and make sure that we own them; that we are truly the authors of our own ambitions.
because it"s bad enough not getting what you want, but it"s even worse to have an idea of what it is you want, and find out, at the end of the journey, that it isn"t, in fact, what you wanted all along.
so, i"m going to end it there. but what i really want to stress is: by all means, success, yes. but let"s accept the strangeness of some of our ideas.
let"s probe away at our notions of success. let"s make sure our ideas of success are truly our own.thank you very much.
chris anderson: that was fascinating. but how do you reconcile this idea of it being bad to think of someone as a "loser," with the idea that a lot of people like, of seizing control of your life, and that a society that encourages that, perhaps has to have some winners and losers?
alain de botton: yes, i think it"s merely the randomness of the winning and losing process that i want to stress, because the emphasis nowadays is so much on the justice of everything, and politicians always talk about justice. now i"m a firm believer in justice, i just think that it"s impossible.
so we should do everything we can to pursue it, but we should always remember that whoever is facing us, whatever has happened in their lives, there will be a strong element of the haphazard.
that"s what i"m trying to leave room for; otherwise, it can get quite claustrophobic.
ca: i mean, do you believe that you can combine your kind of kinder, gentler philosophy of work with a successful economy?
or do you think that you can"t, but it doesn"t matter that much that we"re putting too much emphasis on that?
ab: the nightmare thought is that frightening people is the best way to get work out of them, and that somehow the crueler the environment, the more people will rise to the challenge.
you want to think, who would you like as your ideal dad? and your ideal dad is somebody who is tough but gentle. and it"s a very hard line to make. we need fathers, as it were, the e_emplary father figures in society, avoiding the two e_tremes, which is the authoritarian disciplinarian on the one hand, and on the other, the la_, no-rules option.
ca: alain de botton.
ab: thank you very much.

dear all,
e_perience makes you succeedi still remembered the first time when i became a technical secondary school teacher of english literature. it seemed that it happened yesterday.
at that day, i got quite ready and i had the confidence to be a good teacher. i arrived at the classroom, eager to share my knowledge and e_perience with all the students of my class. having prepared for two days, i had no doubt to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature.
