a helping hand
a man who lived in a block of apartments thought it was raining and put his head out the window to check. as he did so a glass eye fell into his hand.
he looked up to see where it came from in time to see a young woman looking down.
"is this yours?" he asked.www.koomao.com
she said, "yes, could you bring it up?" and the man agreed.
on arrival she was profuse in her thanks and offered the man a drink. as she was very attractive he agreed. shortly afterwards she said, "i"m about to have dinner. there"s plenty. would you like to join me?"
he readily accepted her offer and both enjoyed a lovely meal. as the evening was drawing to a close the lady said, "i"ve had a marvelous evening. would you like to stay the night?"
the man hesitated then said, "do you act like this with every man you meet?"
"no," she replied, "only those who catch my eye."

用英語演講,不要用太多 i feel, i think,老是用i,顯得十分主觀,狹隘。
比如:you should not smoke.
four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.
we are met on a great battlefield of that war. we have come to dedicate a portion of the field as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives that the nation might live. it is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. but in a larger sense we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground.
the brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. the world will little note, nor long remember, what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.
it is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. it is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, ----that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion, ----that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, ----that this nation, under god, shall have a new birth of freedom, ----and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
最常用的是 ladies and gentlemen,也可根據(jù)不同情況,選用 fellow students, distinguished guests, mr chairman, honorable judges(評委)等等。

a young friend of mine asked me in a letter, “what kind of man should i be?” my answer was, “be a fighter.”
another friend of mine inquired, “how should i live my life?” again my answer was, “be a fighter.”
the author of in praise of the fighter says:
riding on the ceaseless rushing torrent of life, i should pursue and overtake it so as to create an even greater and deeper torrent of my own.
if i were a lamp, it would be my duty to light up thick darkness. if i were the sea tide, i would marshal rolling waves to cleanse the beach of all accumulated filth.
this quotation reflects aptly the state of mind of a lighter.
fighters are badly needed in our time. but such fighters do not necessarily go to the battle- field gun in hand. their weapons are not necessarily bullets. their weapons may be knowledge, faith and strong will. they can bring the enemy sure death without drawing his blood.
a fighter is always in pursuit of light. instead of basking in the sunshine under a clear sky, he holds a burning torch in the darkness of night to illuminate people"s way so that they can continue their journey till they see the dawn of a new day. it is the task of a fighter to dispel darkness. instead of shirking darkness, he braves it and fights the hidden demons and monsters therein. he is determined to wipe them out and win light. he knows no compromise. he will keep on fighting until he wins light.
a fighter is perennially young. he is never irresolute or inactive. he plunges deep into teeming crowds in search of such vermin as flies and venomous mosquitoes. he will fight them relentlessly and refuse to coe_ist with them under the same sky. to him, life means nothing but continuous fighting. he either survives by winning light, or perishes with his body covered all over with cuts and bruises. in the course of the struggle, it is the “future” that serves as the beacon light to him; the “future” gives people hope and inspiration. he will never lose his youthful vigour.
a fighter will never lose heart or despair. he will pile up broken pieces of brick and stone to rebuild a nine-story pagoda on the ruins of failure. no blows will ever break his will. he will never close his eyes until he has breathed his last.
a fighter is always fearless. his steps are firm. once he has settled on an objective, he will press right ahead. he is never afraid of being tripped by a stumbling block. no obstacles will ever make him change his mind. his eyes will never be hoodwinked by false appearances. his actions are guided by faith. he can endure any hardships or sufferings while striving to attain his chosen objective. he will never abandon work as long as he is alive.
this is the kind of fighter we now need. he is not necessarily possessed of superhuman capability. he is just an ordinary person. anyone can be a fighter so long as he has the determination. hence a few words of mine about “being a fighter” to encourage those young people who wander about in a depressed state, not knowing which way to go.

good morning, ladies and gentlemen, i’m very glad to make a speech here. today my topic is “i love you, china.” since the day i was born, i began to have a proud name—chinese. since the day i began to talk, the most beautiful sentence i’ve ever learnt has been “i love you, china!” i love you, china, and i’m so proud of being a chinese. i’m proud that i’ve got the beautiful yellow skin, black eyes and black hair. i’m also proud that i speak the most beautiful language in the world—chinese. i love you, china, for i can feel the deep love you give me every day, every minute.
last year, i got an opportunity to visit the united states of america. during my staying there, my father’s boss once invited my family to dinner. while at table, he looked at me and asked: “little boy, how long have you been in america?” “about a month,” i answered, “how lucky you are!” he said, “if you were living in china, how could you learn such perfect english?” i smiled and told him proudly that all the students in china are able to learn english at school. i saw his surprised eyes and said to myself, “i’m proud of you, china. for you are offering us the best education.” when i came back from the usa, my friends asked me: “how do you feel about your staying there?” “wonderful” i said. “then why do you come back?” hearing this, i told them there were lots of beautiful countries in the world, but none of them can compare with our own country—china. how true the saying is: “there’s no place like home!” i love you, china. as a young student, all we should do is to study hard and devote ourselves whole-heartedly in the future, to the great cause of building you into an even stronger and greater country in the world. i love you, my dear motherland! i love you, china! thank you for your listening !

dear editor,
i am writing to e_press my views on the playground vandalism near my housing estate. the housing estate where i live in in the new territories has many e_cellent facilities. while most people treat them properly, there are some people destroy all these valuable public resources. the playground equipment is heavily damaged. some facilities are burned and broken. the graffiti are completely covered all over the place. some of the graffiti even includes bad language. it’s adversely influence the children safety and our precious public resources.
the reason of this vandalism is mainly related to the people who are out of boredom and the shortage of security. nowadays, most teenagers like to spend their time through hanging out with friends. when they have nothing to play or any recreational activities, the playground may be targeted as an amusement for spending their time. due to teenagers are now in the process of building self-worth and self-esteem, they will try to do something over in order to get the peer recognition. for instant, the teenagers pretend to be a leader through destroying the facilities. in these recent years, these selfish and irresponsible behaviors under the fabricating, e_aggerating from social media, started becoming rationalized. that’s why the playground vandalism happens. secondly, it is because of the shortage of security guards. if there is security guard checking the playground regularly, to deter any vandalism promptly, this phenomenon will not happen.
to solve the problem, establishing a youth centre and forming a management committee are the best ways to solve the problem. since teenagers are having more free time, their needs of recreational activity are relatively elevated. therefore, if there’s any activity or place to let them spend their free time, they will naturally lose interest in the destruction of the park, so as to protect the playground’s facilities and relieve the serious vandalism efficaciously. establishing a youth centre is the best way to let the teenagers getting the community involved and spends their free time. in the youth centre, it will be provided some sporting equipment, chess game for them to play. also, the youth centre will organize some activities for teenagers to enrich their life and help them to build up self-esteem, responsibility and self-worth. let them can get into the community involved in the future easily.
second, it’s about the security. due to the shortage of security guard, the teenagers can go to destroy the park whenever they want. nobody cares about it and looks after the place. it’s conceivable that the vandalism will continuously happen if there isn"t any security guard. in contrast, if there is a management committee to supervise the playground, patrol it regularly, teenagers will behave more appropriate if they know that someone is watching them, so as to protect our facilities.
the situation now needs urgent attention! the e_isting playground is broken and dangerous for young children to play in. it’s not just vandalism, is a danger bomb in the society! if the problem cannot be solved promptly, it will become a vicious cycle, fully threaten our children safety and our daily life. therefore, i earnestly urge the relevant departments to face and solve this problem immediately, so as to protect our children and facilities.

my attitude towards to marks 我的分數(shù)觀
for our students, marks is above everything. teachers will judge us from our marks. with marks we can be enrolled into junior middle schools. with marks, we can be enrolled into senior middle schools. with marks we can be enrolled into college. with marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctrine studies. still with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go abroad for further studies. our parents will be strict with us with the marks. our society judge us from marks. however, sometimes we students compare one another with marks directly. we are completely controlled by marks. we like them and we feel sorry for them. but what attitude towards our marks should we take?
truly, marks functions cannot be underestimated. in terms of test in our study, marks are fair and real. that is the reason why we say "everyone is equal before marks. "
however, i think marks are the sole standard to judge the success or failure of students in e_ams. sometimes, marks more than ten or less than one or two in our e_ams comparing with others mean not everything. the success or failure in e_ams will be influenced by e_perience on the spot and the e_aminee"s health etc. once in a while one cannot fail in e_ams. " success or failure is common sense for military. " i think everyone is familiar with the famous saying. don"t you think such will be the case with our study? in e_ams, one cannot be " never-defeated general" . even though one will be very good in everyday study, he cannot succeed in every e_am sometimes. we can get proof from the fact that the very best one we call "number one scholar" in the entrance e_ams for college and ordinary middle school and specialized secondary school over the years is not eminent above all others nor top student in every study.
as a matter of fact, "high marks" and "ability" are not unified. some time ago, a new phrase " high marks but poor competence" came into being. once i happened to meet such a teacher as this .it is said that the teacher just graduated from a far-famed key university. but his teaching result is much less than that of the one who just graduated from a not-well-renowned college. when lecturing, the teacher only repeated what the te_t-books says, which was very dull so the his students" interest in learning was not aroused. his teaching was short of unity of teaching and learning. at present there is a fact that we know a few brilliant and top college graduates are not qualified for their posts. the reason for it may be lack of the ability to combine knowledge learnt from books with pragmatics in their work. students of this kind will be successful in every e_am but they will be able to use freely their knowledge in their posts. don"t you think it waste training such persons for the country?
to sum up from the above, i can say marks are not absolutely authoritative for some. if we neglect training and developing the students" ability and competence and if we only seek for the high marks, we will be absolutely wrong. we should take an objective attitude towards the marks. neither should we neglect them nor should we overvalue them like a god.

what success means to me?
once upon a time, an old rich woman left all her property to the person who could answer her question correctly. her question was this “what is the most important thing for a person who wants to succeed?” to my surprise, the answer was not money, not power, not even opportunity, but “ambition”.
why is ambition so important? a person without ambition is like a near-sighted lion. all the things in the distance appear blurred. no matter how strong it is, it can"t go far.
a lion lives to rule the whole plain. a person must prove that “i am a king here”, at least you are the king of yourself.
nowadays, the world is very competitive. even if you get to the top of your own field, there might be still someone better than you. so we have to ask ourselves: what is the proof of success? i believe it is doing something for this world.
remember: as a successful person, in addition to ambition, the other key you must hold is love. when you look back at history, you"ll find you were standing on the shoulders of the giants. you have enjoyed what they had left you. so we should live to work for the improvement of the world. from president to citizen, we should all take part in building a new www for which i have my own e_planation ----it is“of the world, by the world, for the world”. only as a member of the global village, can you feel you are really successful.

i have a dream
good morning ladies and gentlemen:
everyone sitting here has his own dream. martin luther king"s dream is to let all the negro slaves not wallow in the valley of despair; abraham lincoln"s dream is to unite all the americans. today i"m proud to say that i have a dream, my dream is to be a diplomat.
if i"m a diplomat, first of all, i"ll devote myself to the taiwan issue. the majority of chinese people strongly oppose taiwan"s independence, because we have been separated from our relations and friends for more than 50 years. as president lincoln said: a house divided against itself cannot stand. so as a diplomat, i will try to get all the separate families reunited and shorten the distance between the hearts of two peoples. nowadays, china plays an important economic and political role in the world, so i"m sure that i"ll be able to convince big countries such as america, britain and russia to support our one-china policy.
second, i"ll fight terrorism. i want to bring everlasting peace back to the human race. terrorists are so rampant now that thousands of civilians have been killed and wounded in e_plosions and attacks-mothers have lost their babies; wives have lost their husbands. terrorism imposes misery on all human beings. everyone, no matter who he is or where he lives, is naturally anti-terrorism. so as a diplomat, i have a responsibility to ally china with all the countries fighting terrorism to free the civilians from the spiritual shackles.
if i"m a diplomat, i"ll take president lincoln as my e_ample-“with malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right!” in a word i"ll dedicate all my knowledge and wisdom to sail china towards a beautiful and promising future!
thank you!

there was an elder who traveled all around the world to introduce china for bidding olympic games. that special hard e_perience had rooted in his mind. after hearing the good news that china succeeded in the bid for hosting the 29th olympic games, he was so e_cited that he could not stop shedding tears, saying i had been waiting for the day since 1993, the happiest thing finally happened to china. the man is mr. hezhenliang, who has devoted his rest life to chinese olympic games. it is with his spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of patriotism to china that we are taking our ne_t step into the world.
ladies and gentlemen, now i have a question for all of you who are sitting here. do you still remember that memorable scene? yes or no? please put out your hands, let me see how many? wow, a lot of people. the unforgettable moment is still lingering in your mind clearly.
at 10:08 p.m. on july 13th, 20__, mr. samaranch, the former president of the international olympic committee, announced in moscow that the sponsoring city of the 29th olympiad will be the city of beijing. just at the same time in china, the e_citement rippled through the olympic conference room into beijing, into the city and into the whole nation. the chinese, abroad or at home, celebrated the successful great moment in various ways, like hugging each other, jumping, yelling, crying, drinking, singing, dancing and parading on the streets in the midnight. modern china, a product of 5000 years of civilization and history, with her spirit of hard work and perseverance, finally shook hands with the olympic games, fulfilling the long e_pected dream.
now many chinese are trying their best to do what they can do for the upcoming games. they learn english to communicate with foreigners. they get rid of bad habits to protect environments. they are eager to be volunteers to serve the olympic games. they introduce great chinese tradition, culture and civilization to the world people. they apply for the torchbearers to carry on the message “share the peace, share the olympics”.
at the moment when one-year countdown has marked, our chinese people are getting ready for this big event. the beijing olympic committee organization is keeping the promise made in the bid. under the guidance of the concept of the green olympic, the tech-olympic and the people’s olympic, the 29th olympic games will strengthen the communication, enhance the cooperation, and shorten the distance between china and the world.
once again, i want to emphasize one point “national participation”. like us, a common citizen, we strongly realize the responsibility of our own: planting more trees to cover the space, driving less to relieve the traffic jam, making full use of energy to reduce the pollution and so on. all these actions will not only improve our living environments, but also benefit our coming generation.
ne_t year in august 8th, beijing will witness the world’s greatest sporting event, will bring olympic values to one-fifth of the world’s population, will be one of the most e_citing projects in olympic history. beijing, a main attraction to tourists, will stretch hands to give the world people a warm welcome, and all the guests will be impressed deeply by china’s state-of-the-art venues, comfortable city environments, enthusiastic volunteers and overwhelming public interest.

good morning everyone
it"s a great honor for me to stand here to deliver a speech to you. then today i want to talk something about dreams and reality.
as the famous russian litterateur lev tolstoy (列夫、托爾斯泰)said, "ideal is the beacon(煙火、燈塔). without ideal, there is no secure (無慮的, 安全的, 安心的, 可靠的, 保險的)direction; without a direction, there is no life." so there’s no doubt that everyone needs his or her own ideal. have you ever thought that what is practical and sensible(.明智的, 有感覺的, 明理的) will connect with our most treasured dreams? maybe, to somebody, reality has little relation to ideal. to others nothing can be done without the sense of reality. so make our dreams a part of our reality. and make our reality a part of our dreams. there is no reason why our dreams must oppose our reality. improve our dreams and our reality by bringing them together.
as a university student, establishing a dream is one of the most important things we have to do .but everyone must see the reality clearly at first. your family condition, your personal ability, your social intercourse (交往、交流), your subject and the job you want to do, these things show you the reality and lead you to establish a dream.
further more, difficult or otherwise, we should put the power of reality into our dreams. last but not least remember to work hard at the task of chasing 追逐our dreams. do believe that we can achieve our ideal step by step by the passage of time!
in the end, i want to share with you a poetry named " i think i can"
maybe you can not understand the meaning of the poetry , but do not be worried ,let me tell you the meaning
thank you for your listening!

my first english teacher
dear friends!
do you still remember your first english teacher? you may say:“ yes.” everyone has his teachers, in my mind, i"ll never forget her ------my first english teacher ms. li. without her, i wouldn"t be standing here. she is a young and lovely lady with beautiful eyes. her voice sounds sweet and she speaks english very well. that was the first impression she left on us when she first gave us an english lesson.
in her class, she taught us carefully and patiently. she always made opportunities for us to speak english. she gave us many beautiful pictures to talk on them, played games with us and told us many interesting stories. little by little, i had interest in english, but english was a new subject to me, i had many difficulties in learning it well. i often felt very confused. it was ms. li who helped me to find ways to overcome my difficulties. she helped me to practice speaking english everyday. she always encouraged me whenever i lost heart. she helped me to have confidence in myself. she gave me what i needed, courage, confidence, good ways to learn english and opportunities to speak english in class. so i was grateful for her. maybe i can"t meet her again. the only thing i can give her is my best wishes. i wish my dear teacher happiness, good health and good luck. and i also want to say to her: thank you, ms. li. i love you!

my purpose of being here
good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, distinguished leaders and judges. it"s really my great pleasure to be here.
just now, off the stage, i was wondering if i could present well here, but now in the spotlight, i am not that nervous, and all i want to show you is my personality and confidence.
i"m always puzzled by a question that is: is it true that _injiang students don"t have ability to have a big talent in learning english. i happened to hear that many people think _injiang is a poor area with lots of low educated people there. they don"t believe _injiang students can do as well as the students in big cities like beijing or shanghai. even worse, someone ever asked me if i rode camel to go to school and had english classes. i was e_tremely angry and i didn"t know how they could ask such questions. later i realized that they look down on the education and economy of _injiang. so my purpose of being here is to change this kind of view. in my opinion, wherever you study, the most important point is yourself. things are decided by your position. i mean i"m not going to win a prize for myself, but to win much honor for my hometown. i"ll let you know how is _injiang student"s ability, and show you, everyone here and the audiences all over this nation, _injiang students do have ability to be the champion. it"s certain that i"d love to win me a big prize, because i love myself, but more important i love my hometown.
thank you.

who arrived at the place all belong to yesterday. even if the mountains green again the water to show that water again gentleness. too deep linger became a fetters trip over not only have two feet and in the future.
how can you don"t like to start? it is a pity that haven"t seen on lofty mountains; see the lofty mountains and have not seen the sea vast is still a pity; see the vastness of the sea have never seen a vast desert still sad; see the vast desert have not seen the mystery of forest or regret. there are a lot of scenery in the world i have not old.
i know dashan is rocky the sea waves the desert sand forest have a beast of prey. even so i still like it.
break the peace of life is another scene. glad i haven"t old. what about even old not words called hale and hearty?
so i would also like to learn from the mountain i also want to learn from the brave i also want to learn from the desert i also want to learn from the forest alert. i want to learn to taste a colorful life.
how far one can go? this is not to ask two feet but ask ambition; man can climb much higher? this thing is not to ask his hands but asked will. so i want to use the youth blood raise a lofty goals for yourself. is not only to win a glorious but also in pursuit of a kind of state. goals is glorious goal not life will be because of the wind and rain all the way walk becomes rich and colorful; in my opinion this is not to life.
yes i like to start i wish you also like it.
in life often have numerous blow from outside but what effect will these blows to you the final say in your hands.

for our students, marks is above everything. teachers will judge us from our marks. with marks we can be enrolled into junior middle schools. with marks, we can be enrolled into senior middle schools. with marks we can be enrolled into college. with marks we can be enrolled into postgraduate and doctrine studies. still with marks we can be graded and be allowed to go abroad for further studies. our parents will be strict with us with the marks. our society judge us from marks. however, sometimes we students compare one another with marks directly. we are completely controlled by marks. we like them and we feel sorry for them. but what attitude towards our marks should we take?
truly, marks functions cannot be underestimated. in terms of test in our study, marks are fair and real. that is the reason why we say "everyone is equal before marks. "
however, i think marks are the sole standard to judge the success or failure of students in e_ams. sometimes, marks more than ten or less than one or two in our e_ams comparing with others mean not everything. the success or failure in e_ams will be influenced by e_perience on the spot and the e_aminee"s health etc. once in a while one cannot fail in e_ams.
