once upon a time there were a fisherman and his wife who lived together in a filthy shack near the sea. every day the fisherman went out fishing, and he fished, and he fished. once he was sitting there fishing and looking into the clear water, and he sat, and he sat. then his hook went to the bottom, deep down, and when he pulled it out, he had caught a large flounder.
then the flounder said to him, "listen, fisherman, i beg you to let me live. i am not an ordinary flounder, but an enchanted prince. how will it help you to kill me? i would not taste good to you. put me back into the water, and let me swim."
"well," said the man, "there"s no need to say more. i can certainly let a fish swim away who knows how to talk."with that he put it back into the clear water, and the flounder disappeared to the bottom, leaving a long trail of blood behind him. then the fisherman got up and went home to his wife in the filthy shack.
"husband," said the woman, "didn"t you catch anything today?" "no," said the man. "i caught a flounder, but he told me that he was an enchanted prince, so i let him swim away.""didn"t you ask for anything first?" said the woman. "no," said the man. "what should i have asked for?"
"oh," said the woman. "it is terrible living in this shack. it stinks and is filthy. you should have asked for a little cottage for us. go back and call him. tell him that we want to have a little cottage. he will surely give it to us.""oh," said the man. "why should i go back there?" "look," said the woman, "you did catch him, and then you let him swim away. he will surely do this for us. go right now."
the man did not want to go, but neither did he want to oppose his wife, so he went back to the sea.when he arrived there it was no longer clear, but yellow and green. he stood there and said: "mandje! mandje! timpe te! flounder, flounder, in the sea! my wife, my wife ilsebill, wants not, wants not, what i will?"the flounder swam up and said, "what does she want then?"
"oh," said the man, "i did catch you, and now my wife says that i really should have asked for something. she doesn"t want to live in a filthy shack any longer. she would like to have a cottage.""go home," said the flounder. "she already has it."
the man went home, and his wife was standing in the door of a cottage, and she said to him, "come in. see, now isn"t this much better?"there was a little front yard, and a beautiful little parlor, and a bedroom where their bed was standing, and a kitchen, and a dining room. everything was beautifully furnished and supplied with tin and brautensils, just as it should be. and outside there was a little yard with chickens and ducks and a garden with vegetables and fruit.
"look," said the woman. "isn"t this nice?""yes," said the man. "this is quite enough. we can live here very well.""we will think about that," said the woman.then they ate something and went to bed.
everything went well for a week or two, and then the woman said, "listen, husband. this cottage is too small. the yard and the garden are too little. the flounder could have given us a larger house. i would like to live in a large stone palace. go back to the flounder and tell him to give us a palace.""oh, wife," said the man, "the cottage is good enough. why would we want to live in a palace?"

win competition of environment protection for beijing
although the __ olympics are still three years away, another special competition has already started in beijing. this time, the competitors are not the athletes from all over the world, but the people living in beijing. the special competition is not held in a stadium, but in every street and every corner of beijing. i suppose some of you may have already guessed what the special competition is. yes, it is the competition of protecting our environment and creating a green beijing for the __ olympic games.
someone may ask who is our rival in this competition? the modern los angeles, the charming sydney, or the historic athens? no, none of them. the real rival is ourselves. it is our bad habits of neglecting to protect environment in our daily life.
several years ago, i was very lucky to have an opportunity to live in the united states for about two years. i not only enjoyed the beautiful environment there, but also appreciated the american people"s active way of protecting their environment. now, whenever the environment protection is mentioned, a beautiful view of california will arise in my mind: white clouds flying acrothe blue sky, green grassplot sprinkled with colorful flowers and small animals playing happily among the trees.
i remember that at the beginning of my coming to america, i often went to my father"s working place, the united states geological survey, to have fun. each time i found a lot of people riding bicycles to their offices. among the cyclists, an old man with white hair attracted my attention. curiously, i asked my father," why does the old man ride his bike to work every day? doesn"t he have enough money to buy a car?" father laughed, "no, not because of money. actually, he is one of the greatest scientists in the world. he can afford to buy a motorcade if he likes. he is just an environmentalist and usually doesn"t drive unlegoing shopping, or in bad weather. in america, there are a lot of environmentalists, who actively protect their environment. for e_ample, in palo alto city we are living now, there is even a bicycle-to-work day on may 19th every year to encourage people to decrease air pollution caused by cars".
later, i also learnt another interesting fact of environment protection there. in some states of america, in order to decrease air pollution, save energy and reduce traffic jams, state governments encourage people to take buses to work or to share a car among several people. they even set special "diamond lanes" in some main streets, which are only for the vehicles with 2 or more people.
the positive actions of american people and the effective measures the american government takes in environment protection fully won my respects and deeply affected my consciousnein environment protection.
when i was back in china, people often asked me: " what do you think of america?" i always bolt out:" wonderful, especially the beautiful environment." frankly speaking, after several years, the faces of my american teachers and friends have gradually faded away from my mind, but the blue sky, green graand lovely animals in california often arise in my mind, and became my dream of visiting there again.
the __ olympics provide us with the opportunity to publicize and practise environment protection in beijing. is it possible for beijing to is it possible for beijing to become as beautiful as california? the answer is "yes", but the dream needs every beijing citizen"s full support and active moves to accomplish.
from now on, if every student who is driven to school can take bus or ride bicycle to school once a week, if every car owner goes to work in a car pool once a week, we can make a difference. if everyone can actively protect the environment in our daily life, the blue sky, green graand lovely animals in california will appear in beijing.

economical globalization & development of china
good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, my name is zhang botao, i am from shaan_i university of science & technology.
when i stand here to deliver my speech, i’m a little worried about my cell phone and also yours. i’m afraid that one of them may suddenly ring loudly so that my fascinating speech will probably be interrupted by simens, nokia, motorola or panda. and this is just one possible result caused by economic globalization. no matter if you admit it or not, we are now all in a global village and economic globalization is here to stay.
nowadays, economic globalization is being referred to more and more. i don’t know who first invented the word, but undoubtedly, it is steadily and ine_orably becoming more and more common and important. it covers our world so quickly, just like influenza. as charles darwin noted: survival of the fittest. in order to adapt to this great and global reform, i think, there must be something important and urgent we need to do, for every nation, every corporation, and even to every person.
first, take me for an e_ample. just ten years ago, i did not know what a computer was, let alone what it can do. but since 2001, i cannot live without my computer, just like i can’t live without my cell phone! of course, these great changes are derived from economic globalization, and the rapid development of china. for every chinese man like me, these rapid changes mean great challenge: because of economic globalization, many new technologies rushed into china without translation; because of economic globalization, many unknown software appeared on our desks; and, because of the economic globalization, we must hasten our rhythm of living, working and even resting. the speed of the development of china has been tremendously accelerated, so if we don’t want to be elapsed from this great tidal wave of development, we must understand the meaning of this phrase very clearly: one is never too old to learn.
second, to an enterprise in china, it also means a problem concerning survival. our entrance to wto has paved the way for many super universal corporations to enter the economic market of china. this means the competition in our domestic market will be much more brutal than ever before. if our state enterprises and other companies don’t adjust to this global reform and get used to the more and more cruel competition, surely they will be elapsed in this blood-red economic battle. if you want your company to stand up at last, i think the most important thing for you to do is that, "firm your confidence and welcome the great coming challenge."
third, as globalization is gradually knitting separate national economies into a single one, if one nation would like to stand up and develop during these global changes, it must effectively carry out some economical and political reforms. for e_ample, reducing the ta_ to attract more international organizations to invest in our country, or do some political reforms, to cater for some important international organizations. maintaining an average 8% economic increase rate per year needs not only effective and promising economic policy, but also the prudent leadership.
economic globalization brings us not only a great challenge, but also a great chance to develop. it brings us a great potential of international corporations and makes them take roots and develop in china. and this will create new job opportunities for our huge labor market. if we can strengthen ourselves and take the chance, i promise, china’s development will be hastened greatly, and china will become the leader of economic globalization of the world!

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. today i would like to begin with a story.
there was once a physical 1) therapist who traveled all the way from america to africa to do a 2) census about mountain 3) gorillas. these gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of 4) poaching and being put into the zoo. she went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. she witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we"ve ever been, where in the very depth of the african rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5) cuddled their babies.
yes, that"s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in the mist, based on a true story of mrs. dian fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.
to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.
today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. on the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. it has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in gdp growth. it has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. but on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren"t natural anymore. deforestation to heat lodges is devastating nepal. oil spills from tourist boats are polluting antarctica. tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to u2 on walkman and wear nike and reeboks.
all these 7) appalling(令人震驚的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蝕) our resources.
encouragingly, the e_plosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the united nations has made __ the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world"s attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment.
now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(殘疾人), some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. these are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. why? because they care. because they still want their mother nature back. because they know it still belongs to them.
this kind of feeling that i have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it"s all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish.
the other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. i found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been e_cept the deer.
and all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it"s lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation. once again, i have come to think of mrs. dian fossey be- cause it"s with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our ne_t step into the world.
and no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there"s always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.
thank you very much.
thanks,contestant#18.the topic for your impromptu speech is:which is more important for you: knowledge from books or personal e_perience? answer: thank you. i remember, on my very first day of my beloved university, one of my professors said to me,"from now on, you’ll be on a journey between who you think you are and who yo can be.the key is to allow yourself to continue the journey in the ocean of the books."and i do learn a lot from books: i know the geometry of euclid, logic of
aristotle, fable of aesop known to children around the world. well, no offense to all those great authors of the books, but during my three years at my university, i do realize that personal e_perience through practice means more to me. as we are in this global information age where both economic growth and individual opportunity are based on ideas, a commitment to providing all human beings the golden opportunity to develop themselves is so vital, not only to the people here, but all around. as we are in this transformational age where communications and commerce are global, investments are mobile, technology is almost magical, and the ambition for a better life is now universal, and i think this is why we are here today. we want to earn our personal e_perience through practicing our oral english, sharing our opinions of tourism and ecology with all the judges and audience here. and i think we are so lucky to be alive at this moment of the history. never before have our nation enjoyed so much prospertity and so much social progress with so little internal crises.and never before have our young people had so much great opportunity to practice ourselves and, therefore, have a profound obligation to build a more perfect nation of our ancestor’s dream. and i think our government had provided us young people with the tools and condition to build the future of our dreams. even if we know some rules, some regulations, or e_periences from our books, we still simply cannot graft it onto today’s busier, more impersonal, complicated world. instead, our challenges is to arrive at a consensus values and common vision of what we can do today individually andcollectively to build a strong family and strong community, and above all, make the world a better place for us to live. thank you very much. contestant#18, in your speech, you talked about ecotourism. could you e_plain to us difference between ordinary tourists and e-tourists, or ecotourists?
answer: thank you for your question. and i think the key issue is the differences between our awareness. fot e_ample, if you want to go to a place to have a trip, enjoy your trip. and i think before you get on board, get on the bus, you can have the awareness that "i’m not a polluter, but an environment keeper." we’re not go to all those scenic spots to estroy all those beautiful scenes but we to appreciate the mother nature giving us so much things. thank you very much.
contestant #18,now that information technology is becoming more and more accessible to people in china, do you think books will become less and less important?
answer: well, i think, maybe, umm, i don’t think that all those echnologies can replace the importance of books. we’re in our modern village where so many new industries—it industries, tourism ndustries—crop up every day and this brave new world seem a little bit dehumanizing and inhospitable to a lot of people.the world can no longer be defined as a place on a map or list or people in organizations but i think the true value, the essence of our village remains the same.it is the network of values relationship that support our lives and we can learn those things from our books because books is the very first beginning stage of what we learn. thank you very much.
i’d like to ask you a question about your prepared speech, please. you mention that the un has declated the year __, i think it was, "the year of ecotourism." do you think that such gestures really serve a purpose? answer: and i think one of my teachers said to me, when i prepared my prepared speech, and he tells me that if we pay more attention to omething like environmental protection or ecotourism, it is more, it is better for us to bear in mind we should learn something in our hearts, we should have something about the awareness about how to pay more respect to our environment, not to talk about something orally but to bear something in our hearts. follow our hearts, our environment can be better.thank you very much.

now let’s give a big hand to contestant no.1
-
several days before, when i was walking around in the courtyard,i looked up at the sky and suddenly found the shouting star appear once and then vanish from my sight.at that time,i couldn"t forbear to make a shivering fit.i couldn"t forbear to shout one word out:hope!and then,i fell into thought.
when i got back to the true life,i felt that in the center of my heart there was a clear conclusion never surpassed before---it was love, and then i continued to walk around with the echoes of my voice and the darkness.
you might say that it was philosophy, but i prefered to call it love itself rather than philosophy.
you ask, why?i say because it"s true that we have been leading a difficult life, for we need not only to be under various e_ternal pressures, but also to be in the face of internal perple_ities.you would be effected by the warmth of life if soneone gives you an understanding look during your bitter struggle.even a mere glance can mske you moved and inspired.love comes directly from life and it effects life as well.
you ask, what is love?i"d like to answer you by using a paragraph of the bible.love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. it does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. i t bears all things, hopes all things, endures all things. love never ends.
you ask, what is the reason for us to seek love?i want to answer you by using a paragraph from rossell:i have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy-ecstasy so great that i would often have sacrificed all the rest of my life for a few hours for this joy. i have sought it, ne_t, because it relieves loneliness-that terrible lonelinein which one shivering consciousnelooks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeleabyss. i have sought it, finally, because in the union of love i have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined.
you ask, what is you dream?i can answer in one word---it is love.
i have a dream, that one day, every part of this world will be full of love and people always help each other.
i have a dream, that one day,the main melody of the world will be to foster and enhance love forever and ever.
i have a dream,that one day,in each part of society,love is e_ecuted and isn"t concealed by habit,blurred by time,and eroded by laziness.
i have a dream, that one day, even the most common people and the greatest people will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
i have a dream,today!
who will separate us from love? will hardship, or distre, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? no, in all these things we are more than conquerors through love.
i have a dream, that one day,i will be able to live as the only herald to the gaudy spring of love.
i wouldn"t care succeor failure, for i will only struggle ahead as long as i have been destined to the distance. i wouldn"t care the difficulties around, for what i can leave on the earth is only their view of my back since i have been marching toward the horizontal.
i have a dream that one day, when the saints and poets look at this world, they all will hear the footsteps of love!

a small truth to make life 100%
karamay e_perimental middle school luo jintao
good afternoon, my dear friends and the honorable judges.
i’m very glad to be here and give you my speech. i hope we all can enjoy the time. now, today my topic is: "a small truth to make life 100%".
as a young english teacher, i have to face different kinds of students and deal with trivial things every day. life goes on, but sometimes it’s becoming frustrating and i feel very tired. how to make my life become better? i’m always seeking for the answer. fortunately, when i read a magazine one day, i found the truth to make my life 100%. today i would like to share it with you.
now, my dear friends, let’s do an interesting test together and then you will find the secret by yourself! as we all know, there are 26 alphabets in english, a to z. against them we have the numbers 1% to 26%. if a is equal to 1%, and b to 2%, and so on, until z is equal to 26%, then can you guess what can make our life 100%? that is to say, what can make our life perfect?
some of you may suggest "money". however, after calculating, you’ll find it only comes to 72%. now try a few more. knowledge? yes, knowledge is power! but this time it only comes to 96%. how about love? that only shows at 54%. luck does even worse, only at 47%. though most of us think this is the most important.
then what makes 100%? hard work? closer, 98%. but not e_act. now, what on earth can make life 100%? well, every problem has a solution, only if we perhaps change our attitude. yes! only attitude comes out at 100%.
many of the gifts we have been given have been distributed unfairly. we all wish we had the ability of the talented, the money of the rich, and the luck of the beautiful. but none of these matter. there is only one thing we all have equally and can always control even in the worst situations. and that is our attitude.
life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. therefore, attitude is the thing that shapes who you are the most.
attitude is everything. now, my dear friends, please give the world a sunshine smile. change your attitude and enjoy every minute in your life.
that’s all. thank you!

honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:
today my topic is ’nuclear power: a blessing or a disaster?’
when the first atomic bomb was dropped on hiroshima, japan, the world was thrust into atomic age. meanwhile in the commence of cold war and during its long term, it had set the world into fear and panic of nuclear war many times.
but over the years, nuclear power has found its way to promote goodness for humankind .it promises to provide clean and efficient energy for the centuries to come.
so whether nuclear power a blessing or a disaster?
there is no firm answer for this question from my own perspective.
ladies and gentlemen, my very initial contact with nuclear power was from a tv programme called green space where i saw for the first time how nuclear power had changed people’s lives and what it had left for the residents’ living around chyrnobil nuclear power plant. unfortunately, it was a sad story.
my heart sank when i saw a boy infant appear on the screen smiling with big blue sparkling eyes. he was so cute and adorable just like all the other kids but he was blinded. what’s more, he had to receive medical treatment everyday to alleviate radiation damage, but still stood little chance of growing up. later i learned that inappropriate operation and equipment design defect was responsible for the tradegy .eight years has past, but the picture of that boy’s smile still appears infront of me and reminds me that nuclear power can be a living devil.
however, with the increasing depletion of resources and the instant demand for energy, clean and efficient nuclear power may seem the best choice.
as an old saying goes ’every sword has two blades.’ nuclear power is dangerous, yet efficient; environmental devastated yet clean; e_pensive yet sustainable. it is a matter of how we use and how we treat it. while let’s beyond all this ,whether nuclear power a blessing or a disaster, it’s ours’ choice.
thank you for listening!

ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls,
i am chinese. i am proud of being a chinese with five thousand years of civilization behind. i"ve learned about the four great inventions made by our forefathers. i"ve learned about the great wall and the yangtze river. i"ve learned about zhang heng(張衡)and i"ve learned about zheng he(鄭和).who says the yellow river civilization has vanished(消失)?i know that my ancestors have made miracles(奇跡)on this fertile land and we"re still making miracles. who can ignore the fact that we have established ourselves as a great state in the world, that we have devised our own nuclear weapons, that we have successfully sent our satellites into space, and that our gnp ranks no. 7 in the world? we have e_perienced the plunders (掠奪) by other nations, and we have e_perienced the war. yet, based on such ruins, there still stands our nation----china, unyielding and unconquerable!
i once came across an american tourist. she said, "china has a history of five thousand years, but the us only has a history of 200 years. five thousand years ago, china took the lead in the world, and now it is the us that is leading."my heart was deeply touched by these words. it is true that we"re still a developing nation, but it doesn"t mean that we can despise (鄙視) ourselves. we have such a long-standing history, we have such abundant resources, we have such intelligent and diligent people, and we have enough to be proud of. we have reasons to say proudly: we are sure to take the lead in the world in the future again, for our problems are big, but our ambition (雄心) is even bigger, our challenges (挑戰(zhàn)) are great, but our will is even greater.

good morning ladies and gentlemen:
the title of my speech today is "the doors that are open to us ".
the other day my aunt paid me a visit. she was overjoyed. "i got the highest mark in the mid-term e_amination!" she said. don’t be surprised! my aunt is indeed a student; to be e_act, a college student at the age of 45.
last year, she put aside her private business and signed up for a one-year, full-time management course in a college. "this was the wisest decision i have ever made," she said proudly like a teenage girl. to her, college is always a right place to pick up new ideas, and new ideas always make her feel young.
"compared with the late 70s," she says, "now college students have many doors." my aunt cannot help but recall her first college e_perience in 1978 when college doors began to be re-opened after the cultural revolution. she was assigned to study engineering despite her desire to study chinese literature, and a few years later, the government sent her to work in a tv factory.
i was shocked when she first told me how she (had) had no choice in her major and job. look at us today! so many doors are open to us! i believe there have never been such abundant opportunities for self-development as we have today. and my aunt told me that we should reach our goals by grasping all these opportunities.
the first door i see is the opportunity to study different kinds of subjects that interest us. my aunt said she was happy to study management, but she was also happy that she could attend lectures on ancient chinese poetry and on shakespearean drama. as for myself, i am english major, but i may also go to lectures on history. to me, if college education in the past emphasized specialization, now, it emphasizes free and well-round
《全國英語演講比賽冠軍演講稿:the doors that are open to us》
ed development of each individual. so all the fine achievements of human civilization are open to us.
the second door is the door to the outside world. learning goes beyond classrooms and national boundaries. my aunt remembers her previous college days as monotonous and even calls her generation "frogs in a well." but today, as the world becomes a global village, it is important that our neighbors and we be open-minded to learn with and from each other. i have many fellow international classmates, and i am applying to an e_change program with a university abroad. as for my aunt, she is planning to get an mba degree in the united kingdom where her daughter, my cousin, is now doing her master’s degree in biochemistry. we are now taking the opportunity to study overseas, and when we come back, we’ll put to use what we have learnt abroad.
the third door is the door to lifelong learning. as new ideas appear all the time, we always need to acquire new knowledge, regardless of our age. naturally, my aunt herself is the best e_ample. many of my aunt’s contemporaries say that she is amazingly up-to-date for a middle-aged woman. she simply responds, "age doesn’t matter. what matters is your attitude. you may think it’s strange that i am still going to college, but i don’t think i’m too old to learn." yes, she is right. since the government removed the age limit for college admissions in __, there are already some untraditional students, sitting with us in the same classrooms. like these people, my aunt is old but she is very young in spirit. with her incredible energy and determination, she embodies both tradition and modernity.
the doors open to us also pose challenges. for instance, we are faced with the challenge of a balanced learning, the challenge of pre
《全國英語演講比賽冠軍演講稿:the doors that are open to us》
serving our fine tradition while learning from the west, and the challenge of learning continuously while carrying heavy responsibilities to our work and family. so, each door is a test of our courage, ability and judgment, but with the support of my teachers, parents, friends and my aunt, i believe i can meet the challenge head on. when i reach my aunt’s age, i can be proud to say that i have walked through dozens of doors and will, in the remainder of my life, walk through many more. possibly i will go back to college, too.
thank you very much, ladies and gentlemen.

《全國英語演講比賽冠軍演講稿:the doors that are open to us》

building bridges for the future
i’m studying in a city that’s famous for its walls. people who visit my city are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, especially when silhouetted against the setting sun with gold, shining streaks. the old, cracked bricks are covered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still for centuries.
our ancestors liked to build walls. they built walls in beijing, _i’an, nanjing and many other cities, and they built the great wall, which snakes across half our country. they built walls to protect against enemies and evil spirits. this tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public.
for a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world to me.
my perceptions, however, changed after i made a hiking trip to the eastern suburbs of my city. my classmates and i were walking with some foreign students. as we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, which formed a wide canopy above our heads. suddenly one foreign student asked me, "where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?"
"we’re already in the eastern suburbs," i replied. he seemed taken aback, "i thought you chinese had walls for everything." his remark set off a heated debate. at one point, he likened our walled cities to "jails", while i insisted that the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in china that had no walls.
that debate had no winners, but i did learn a lot from this student. for instance, he told me that some major universities like o_ford and cambridge were not surrounded by walls. i have to admit that we do have many walls in china, and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whether they are physical or intangible. we will keep some walls but tear down those that impede our development.
let me give another e_ample.
a year ago, when i was working on a term paper, i needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. however, the librarian coldly rejected my request to borrow it, saying, "you can’t borrow this book, you’re not a student here." in the end, i had to spend 200 yuan to buy a copy. meanwhile, the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf.
at the beginning of this semester, i heard that my university had started to think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at other universities, so my e_perience wouldn’t be repeated. barriers would be replaced by bridges. an inter-library loan system would give us access to books from any library. with globalization and china integrated into the world, i believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.
i know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. but one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to china’s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to e_amine their role in the modern world.
and how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities? should we tear them down? definitely not. my city, like beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. these walls attract historians, archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history and cultural heritage. walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. if the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls. they are now bridges that link east and west, south and north, and all countries of the world. our cultural heritage will survive globalization.

to be a good traveler
good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen!
my name is zhang junyi, i’m a lovely girl. i’m from zhangcun primary school. today, it’ s my great honor to be here. the title of my speech is "to be a good traveler".
i love traveling very much. i’m so e_citing to visit different places. it’s a good way to make new friends. moreover, it’s like reading a book.
yes, i love traveling. but i hate to see that environment has changed worse and worse. many unknown places are built into resorts, trees are cut down, rivers and lakes are polluted.
but to our delight, our government has become more and more concerned with the protection of the environment.
the government has been doing a great job. and what about us? what should we do? it’s just one step to take, for you, for me, for everyone. if every tourist uses less plastic bags, how much white pollution would disappear; if everyone tries to reach one place of interest on foot, how much clearer the sky would be; and if no guest asks the hotel to change towels every day, how much less detergent would be drained.
it is not difficult, right? it’s just as simple as the famous slogan, "please take away nothing but your smile, and leave behind nothing but your footprint." i believe that we all love our earth. so, now let’s turn our passion in to action. if not us, who? if not now, when?
thank you very much for your attention.

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. today i would like to begin with a story.
there was once a physical therapist who traveled all the way from america to africa to do a census about mountain gorillas. these gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of poachingand being put into the zoo. she went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. she witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we’ve ever been, where in the very depth of the african rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas cuddledtheir babies。
yes, that’s a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called gorillas in the mist, based on a true story of mrs. dian fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.
to me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.
today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. on the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the

respected teachers, my fellow students. today my topic is save resources, better tomorrow. as we all know, the pollution problem may be one of the greatest problems in the world. please look out of the windows! you may easily find: we have more cars but less petrol. we eat more kinds of food, but have fewer kinds of animals; we have higher buildings and wider highways, but narrower points of view; we spend more, but enjoy less, why? because the natural resources are limited.however, people don"t cherish what they have until it"s gone.
but what shall we do to save the resources? we can bring cotton bags with us instead of asking for plastic bags when we go shopping. when we are doing e_ercises in class we can use the both sides of paper to write on. we can recycle empty bottles and tins. we shouldn’t use the wooden chopsticks.
water, valued fresh water, the gift of our generous nature. it is the blood of the earth. it’s one of the most valued things and it’s the beginning of all the lives. we can’t live without water. nowadays, many people are getting sick because of lacking water. many animals are dying of thirst. many rich fields are becoming drier and drier and no longer can be used to grow rice. so to save water, we should use not too much water on the washing. we should remember to turn off the taps when we leave the toilet. we should use water for many times.
pollution is one of the biggest problems in the world. people always pollute the earth. the more people, the more pollution.as teenagers, we should ride bikes instead of going by car or by bus.
if we do like that, our life will be better in the future. the earth is our only home. we should try our best to protect it. in this way, we can ‘see a world in a grain of sand’, ‘a(chǎn) heaven in wild flowers’ and we can also see our bright future from all colorful lives around us! ours sprit is all for one, and one for all to make our homestead better.
that’s all. thanks for listening!

good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen:
when the topic "people and nature" first caught my eye, i was reminded
of a story about myself and my violin.
i began learning to play the violin when i was eight years old. at
first, it was a very hard thing for me. after my continued efforts, i was
able to play a lot of musical pieces very soon. i felt so proud of myself that i began to behave arrogantly.
my violin teacher noticed this and told me: "to be a good violin player,
you should first of all love and respect your violin. you should obey the
rules of playing it so as to make harmonious melodies. remember, play the
violin not only with your hands, but also with your heart and soul. "
ladies and gentlemen, i believe that nature is to people what my violin
