love——the key to motivate our students

good afternoon ladies and gentleman,

it is a great honor to be chosen to speak here. i value this chance of sharing teaching e_perience with distinguished teachers very much. to be honest i felt rather nostalgic when somebody told me i would make a speech before all of you fine people. i can still remember when i made my first speech in college. my heart would have jumped out of my chest if i hadn’t tried my best to control my breath. the reason lies in the fact that i really didn’t know what to say at that time!

well today, being a teacher of english for some years in shenzhen, i have a strong sense of responsibility, which always fills me with strength and confidence.

i am from _inzhou middle school located in the west part of shenzhen. there are two e_tremes in my school. about 38% are from local resident families, whose parents are rich and some even rich enough to own several buildings. but some of the children in such families turned out to be slow in their lessons. they seem to have everything but the motivation of learning. however, about 60% of the students are from working class families in the villages near by, whose parents hold temporary residence identities. sometimes when we visit these students at home we noticed that a large proportion of their living standards are very critical. some don’t even have desks good enough to finish their homework on. no wonder they appear quite reluctant to pay enough attention to the teachers in classes, and always find e_cuses not to finish their homework. and according to assessment criteria there are 40% students struggling to get a pass in the english learning. some even can not make a proper sentence before they are going to take the matriculation e_aminations.

i still remember once i saw my student coming to school with one arm hanging on her neck. when asked she just said she was careless when she run across a pond, fell down and broke her arm. but later i got to know that she fell from the place she sleeps on the temporary second floor at home, where half of it is a small shop in the village, while she was climbing down the ladder. at that time she was in a hurry to go to school. not until then did i realized how hard it is for some of our students to manage to survive in shenzhen, let along concentrate in learning their lessons at school. i believe if children live in poverty, they learn to fight for their future, if children live in comfort they learn to enjoy themselves.

then come the question, "how could i help them?" "what do they need most?" after some years of practicing i got to know three golden rules in english teaching in such kind of schools.

rule no.1 getting to know what e_actly problems in our students’ learning english have and trying best to give them individual instructions;

rule no.2 try best to build up their confidence, let them have a taste of success. make them believe that english is not that difficult as they thought to be;

rule no.3 never trying to teach them the knowledge of english until they really mastered their own way of studying. for the most valuable knowledge is not the knowledge itself; it is the learning strategy.

rule no. 4 the most important aspect in teaching here is love we cherish during teaching. if we don’t love our students whole-heartedly we will never succeed in secondary education in shenzhen.

so from what my e_perience, "love" is the key to motivate our students!

thank you!

change the world? change ourselves

good evening, honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen。

it’s my great pleasure to stand here to present my speech—change the world, change ourselves。

it’s noticable that western holidays are becoming increasingly popular day by day, while chinese traditional festivals are being somewhat neglected。 not long before about 10 doctors in beijing university and qinghua unversity announced that we should reject the invasion of western holidays ,because they regard western holidays as an challenge against our traditional festivals and culture。

frankly speaking, i don’t quite agree with them。indeed, we should never neglect or even discard our traditonal festivals as china boasts a brilliant history and splendid traditions。 (e_amples)。but why can’t we absorb the meaningful western holidays and culture。

there are obvious reasons why some western holidays are so popular in china。 on the one hand, some of the western holidays which we chinese don’t have are reasonable and meaningful, such as father’s day and april fool’s day etc。 on the other hand, the prevalence of globalization enables western culture to prevail in china。 overwhelmed by such a trend, chinese unconsiciously get involved in western holidays and culture。

with the further development of the whole world, the cultural communication between different countries and nations becomes faster and more and more important。 we are indeed from different nations, but we are the citizens of the same world, so the outstanding culture of different nations is the commom wealth of everyone on the earth。the only way for us to protect our traditional culture is to reject the foreign culture? the answer is definitely no。 what we ought to do is to spare no effort to educate chinese to get to know and treasure our splendid traditions instead of rejecting foreign culture。 only by educating can we set our confidence and belief towards our culture。 only by educating can we preserve and promote the wealth that our ancesters left for us。

at last i’d like to share a famouse saying of gandhi with all of you ,that is:if you want to change the world, then you must change yourself first。”

in the pitch-black night, stung by jellyfish, choking on salt water, singing to herself, hallucinating, diana nyad just kept on swimming. and thats how she finally achieved her lifetime goal as an athlete, an e_treme 100-mile swim from cuba to florida, at age 64. hear her story.

its the fifth time diana nyad stand on the cuban shore believing again that she’s going to make it all the way across that vast, dangerous wilderness of an ocean.

life is about the journey, but not really the destination. weve been on a journey. lets face it, were all on a one-way street. what are we going to do as we go forward to have no regrets looking backteddy roosevelt quote was floating around in her brain over the past years in training. it says, "you go ahead and sit back in your comfortable chair as a critic or an observer, while the brave one gets in the ring, engages, gets bloody and dirty, and fails over and over and over again. yet he isnt afraid or timid and lives life in a bold way." when you achieve your dreams, its not so much what you get as who you have become in achieving them.

you have a dream and obstacles in front of you as we all do. none of us ever get through this life without heartache, without turmoil. believe in perseverance and have faith. get back up again when you can get knocked down and you will find your way.

"i have three messages," said the breathless nyad. "the first is we should never ever give up. the second is you are never too old to chase your dreams. and the third is that it looks like the most solitary endeavor in the world but it takes a team."

hellen keller said, "although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it." people always fail because they stop trying, not because they encounter the unbeatable difficulties. "never, never give up" means to keep trying and never stop working for your goals. i think it’s a very good piece of advice for all of us and this is the most important thing that can help us to achieve our goals.

i am quite sure that everybody knows thomas edison. why so many people tried to invent the electric lamp, but only thomas edison succeedif edison, like many others, had been stilted by repeated failures, there would be no vibrant modern cities at night. his success proves that if a person is not scared by seemingly insurmountable adversity, he can find the way to success.

in my opinion, never stop working for your goal doesn’t mean you must be successful. it doesnt even mean that you must achieve your goal, but its very important to keep it in your mind. there are enough unfavorable conditions which make our lives difficult, but what important for us is to make efforts towards your goal or your dream. if you have given your best for your goal or your dream, whether you succeed or not, at least you wont leave any regret in your life.

dont give up working for your goal or your dream. if you succeed, you will taste great joy in your life. if you dont succeed, you wont have regret in your life because you have given your best.

dreams are hard to follow, hold on and there will be tomorrow. you will find the way with the strength to carry on. don’t give up.

honorable judges, fellow students:

good afternoon!

recently, there is a heated debate in our society. the college students are the beneficiaries of a rare privilege, who receive e_ceptional education at e_traordinary places. but will we be able to face the challenge and support ourselves against all odds? will we be able to better the lives of others? will we be able to accept the responsibility of building the future of our country?

the cynics say the college students are the pampered lost generation, which would cringe at the slightest discomfort. but the cynics are wrong. the college students i see are eagerly learning about how to live independently. we help each other clean the dormitory, go shopping and bargain together, and take part time jobs to supplement our pocket money.

the cynics say we care for nothing other than grades; and we neglect the need for character cultivation. but again, the cynics are wrong. we care deeply for each other, we cherish freedom, we treasure justice, and we seek truth.

last week, thousands of my fellow students had their blood type tested in order to make a contribution for the children who suffer from blood cancer.

as college students, we are adolescents at the critical turning point in our lives. we all face a fundamental choice: cynicism or faith, each will profoundly impact our future, or even the future of our country. i believe in all my fellow classmates. though we are still ine_perienced and even a little bit childish.

i believe that we have the courage and faith to meet any challenge and take on our responsibilities. we are preparing to assume new responsibilities and tasks, and to use the education we have received to make our world a better place. i believe in our future.

演說題目:how college loans e_ploit students for profit

演說者:samuel

today 40 million americans are indebted fortheir passage to the new economy. too poor to pay their way through college, they now owe lenders more than one trillion us dollars. they do find what jobsthey can get to pay off a debt that is secured on their person. in america, even a bankrupt gambler gets a second chance. but it is nearly impossible foran american to get discharged their student loan debts.

once upon a time in america, going tocollege did not mean graduating with debt. my friend paul"s father graduatedfrom colorado state university on the gi bill. for his generation, highereducation was free or almost free, because it was thought of as a public good.not anymore.

when paul also graduated from colorado state university, he paidfor his english degree by working part-time. 30 years ago, higher educationtuition was affordable, reasonable, and what debts you accumulated, you paidoff by graduation date. not anymore. paul"s daughter followed in his footsteps, but with one difference: when she graduated five years ago, it was with awhopping debt.

students like kate have to take on a loanbecause the cost of higher education has become unaffordable for many if notmost american families. but so what? getting into debt to buy an e_pensiveeducation is not all bad if you could pay it off with the increased income thatyou earned from it. but that"s where the rubber meets the road. even a collegegrad earned 10 percent more in 20__ than she did in 20__.

so ... tuition costs up, public fundingdown, family incomes diminished, personal incomes weak. is it any wonder thatmore than a quarter of those who must cannot make their student loan payments?the worst of times can be the best of times, because certain truths flash up inways that you can"t ignore. i want to speak of three of them today.

1.2 trillion dollars of debts for diplomasmake it abundantly obvious that higher education is a consumer product you canbuy. all of us talk about education just as the economists do now, as aninvestment that you make to improve the human stock by training them for work.as an investment you make to sort and classify people so that employers canhire them more easily.

the u.s. news & world report ranks colleges justas the consumer report rates washing machines. the language is peppered withbarbarisms. teachers are called "service providers," students arecalled "consumers." sociology and shakespeare and soccer and science, all of these are "content."

student debt is profitable. only not onyou. your debt fattens the profit of the student loan industry. the two800-pound gorillas of which -- sallie mae and navient -- posted last year acombined profit of 1.2 billion dollars. and just like home mortgages, studentloans can be bundled and packaged and sliced and diced, and sold on wallstreet. and colleges and universities that invest in these securitized loansprofit twice. once from your tuition, and then again from the interest on debt.

with all that money to be made, are wesurprised that some in the higher education business have begun to engage infalse advertising, in bait and switch ... in e_ploiting the very ignorance thatthey pretend to educate?

third: diplomas are a brand. many years agomy teacher wrote, "when students are treated as consumers, they"re madeprisoners of addiction and envy." just as consumers can be sold and resoldupgraded versions of an iphone, so also people can be sold more and moreeducation. college is the new high school, we already say that. but why stopthere? people can be upsold on certifications and recertifications, master"sdegrees, doctoral degrees.

higher education is also marketed as astatus object. buy a degree, much like you do a le_us of a louis vuitton bag,to distinguish yourself from others. so you can be the object of envy ofothers. diplomas are a brand.

but these truths are often times hidden bya very noisy sales pitch. there is not a day that goes by without some policyguy on television telling us, "a college degree is absolutely essential toget on that up escalator to a middle-class life." and the usual evidenceoffered is the college premium: a college grad who makes on average 56 percentmore than a high school grad.

let"s look at that number more carefully, because on the face of it, it seems to belie the stories we all hear aboutcollege grads working as baristas and cashiers. of 100 people who enroll in anyform of post-secondary education, 45 do not complete it in a timely fashion, for a number of reasons, including financial. of the 55 that do graduate, twowill remain unemployed, and another 18 are underemployed. so, college gradsearn more than high school grads, but does it pay for the e_orbitant tuitionand the lost wages while at college?

now even economists admit going to collegepays off for only those who complete it. but that"s only because high schoolwages have been cut to the bone, for decades now. for decades, workers with ahigh school degree have been denied a fair share of what they have produced.and had they received as they should have, then going to college would havebeen a bad investment for many. college premium? i think it"s a high school discount.

two out of three people who enroll are notgoing to find an adequate job. and the future, for them, doesn"t lookparticularly promising -- in fact, it"s downright bleak. and it is they who aregoing to suffer the most punishing forms of student debt. and it is they, curiously and sadly, who are marketed most loudly about this college premiumthing. that"s not just cynical marketing, that"s cruel.

so what do we do? what if students andparents treated higher education as a consumer product? everybody else seemsto. then, like any other consumer product, you would demand to know what you"repaying for. when you buy medicines, you get a list of side effects. when youbuy a higher educational product, you should have a warning label that allowsconsumers to choose, make informed choices. when you buy a car, it tells youhow many miles per gallon to e_pect. who knows what to e_pect from a degreesay, in canadian studies. there is such a thing, by the way.

what if there was an app for that? one thatlinked up the cost of a major to the e_pected income. let"s call itincome-based tuition or ibt. one of you make this.

discover your reality.

there are three advantages, three benefitsto income-based tuition. any user can figure out how much money he or she willmake from a given college and major. such informed users are unlikely to fallvictim to the huckster"s ploy, to the sales pitch. but also to choose wisely.why would anybody pay more for college than let"s say, 15 percent of theadditional income they earn?

there"s a second benefit to income-basedtuition. by tying the cost to the income, college administrators would beforced to manage costs better, to find innovative ways to do so. for instance, all of you students here pay roughly the same tuition for every major. that ismanifestly unfair, and should change. an engineering student uses moreresources and facilities and labs and faculty than a philosophy student.

but the philosophy student, as a consequence, is subsidizing the engineeringstudent. who then, by the way, goes on and earns more money. why should twopeople buy the same product, pay the same, but one person receive half or athird of the service. in fact, college grads, some majors, pay 25 percent oftheir income servicing their student debt, while others pay five percent. thatkind if inequity would end when majors are priced more correctly.

now of course, all this data -- and one ofyou is going to do this, right? all this data has to be well designed, maybeaudited by public accounting firms to avoid statistical lies. we know aboutstatistics, right?

but be that as it may, the third andbiggest benefit of income-based tuition, is it would free americans from thefear and the fact of financial ruin because they bought a defective product.

perhaps, in time, young and old americansmay rediscover, as the gentleman said earlier, their curiosity, their love oflearning -- begin to study what they love, love what they study, follow theirpassion ... getting stimulated by their intelligence, follow paths of inquirythat they really want to.

after all, it was eric and kevin, two yearsago, just e_actly these kinds of young men, who prompted me and worked with me,and still do, in the study of indebted students in america.

thank you for your attention.(applause)
